Restore from desktop
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:05:33 PM »
Hi,

I was migrating an older sme 7 to a new hardware and sme 7.4. And I noticed that there is no more restore from the desktop.

Why? and what's the purpose of backup to the desktop if you can't restore. How to backup if I don't have access to tape drives?

Thanks

Why?

I'm sure you can find out if you do a little searching.

Transfer to DVD and then do the restore.

Have you read the users guide and FAQ (at least twice)?

Yes, that's what I read. I tried and it didn't work properly.

What about the file ownerships. Can't transfer those unless I recreate all the users and groups. That was the job of the "restore from desktop job". If not all the ownerships will be root:root, and that's what happened to me.

Please report any problems via the Bug Tracker. Restore from backup should "just work".

The standard "restore" process after a fresh install should restore all users, groups and correct ownership.

1. What's a standard restore?
2. May be, I didn't do a "standard" restore. I did:
a: I copied the tarred file to the hard drive
  b: did an extract
c: all the files were owned by root:root, the userid I was using at the time to do the restore.

Not what you did. Read the Users Guide.

It's the restore option you are given ONLY once, ie the first time you start up your server after installing a fresh copy of the operating system.
This is the recommended procedure as all full restores should ONLY be done to a freshly installed & unmodified operating system. You would have known this if you had read the manual.

Additional information here to reset the option to restore on first boot:

That's to be expected, and what you did was obviously very incorrect.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
