Virtuel test server
« on: August 09, 2009, 05:14:28 PM »
Hi
How to obtain a test server.
I would like to have a test server, so I can:
1. Test before updating, and
2. See the contribs I'm translating.
I see 2 possible alternatives. Installing vmware on the server or my windows vista PC.
But before I start, I would like some very basic help.
Are there other alternatives (besides hardware and XEN)?
If I want to test my HW before updating, it is necessary to install on the server, right?
There are several vmware:
•   VMware vSphere
•   VMware ESXi 3.5 & 4.0
•   VMware Player 2.5
•   VMware Workstation
•   VMware Server 2
•   …
From this http://wiki.contribs.org/Vmware I guess VMware Server 2 is the right choice in my situation, right?
Installing Vmware on a existing SME 7.4 server must mean some risks for failing. I will naturally take a total backup before installing, but what are the chances of a failing installation, and that are the possibilities of uninstalling?
During installation, will the existing server be available. If not, how long does the installation take?
As good practice, I will put the downloaded files in (Arrr, can't find the article, where is it?)
Please explain a newbie. What to do when installation is finish, and I want to install an additional server as a testserver?
Is it a good idea to install Management UI, what are the advantages/disadvantages?
Sorry for the many question, I hope to be able to improve/update the existing contribs (shouldn't it be a how to?)

P1ur
