Topic: SME 7.4 Breaks on Yum Update --- Ideas??

Server set up:  SME 7.4 running as a virtual machine which is dedicated for use
as a zarafa mail server.

I run the "yum update" command which triggers the latest updates to install
(something like 92 packages).  This appears to run normally.

I complete the update with the normal signal-event commands (post-upgrade and
reboot).  These appear to run normally.

I have access via the console, but any other interface is not responded to.  I
cannot access server manager either from console or from a web browser.  WinSCP
and Putty access is not possible.  Mail clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, Webmail)
all time out.

I have gone through this process twice with the same results.  I did a reboot
and noted the httpd service seemed to start normally.  I was not able to access
the logs (marginal command line skills). I restore a virtural machine snapshot
which keeps me in business. 

Not sure where to go with this.  Any ideas?

probably you are upgrading the kernel too; in this case you have to rebuild the kernel module..

Assuming you run it as a VMWare guest you most likely need to rerun vmware-config.pl (I believe that was the name of the script) to compile the new network interface modules.

You will have to do this after each upgrade that also contains a new kernel as the network modules are specific to your kernel.

Thank you for your responses.  I will give it a try and report back.  I will need to wait until this evening when I can properly shut down the server without hacking off the users.  I can't believe I am showing this level of sensitivity to the users...

What you are suggesting seems to make good sense.  I had looked over the updates and did not see a new kernel on the list, however, my inspection may not have been complete.  Fingers crossed....

The issue appears to be caused by having VM-Tools running on the virtual machine.  I terminated that process and all the problems were cleared up (solution was suggested on the bug tracker Bug 5452).

Please update documentation to ensure that there is a warning added about running vmware-tools, and that vmware-tools are not required to run SME server.

No one else reported the problem.  Before a general warning is issued, perhaps it would be best to see if this problem is replicable by others.  There very well may be something specific about my setup that triggered the problem.

I am not at all knowledgeable of VM Tools to warn off others.
