Topic: Very slow install sme 7.4 on sata disks

Hello !

I tried to install SME 7.4 on a new machine (hp dc5700 microtower) with 2 sata disks (500 gb, both).
It takes 2 hours to install. And, of course, everything i do, it takes very long.

I cheked up in bios for SATA controler settings and i don't have the option to change the SATA controler to work in AHCI mode (as is described in http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=44306.0).

I've set the jumpers to 150/mbps transfer rate and is the same speed.

Can you help me, please ?

Hi. Sometimes, the AHCI mode is called enhanced, or native. Do you have something like that ?

Hi !

I modified in bios, at /device configuration/transfer mode = enhanced hdma option, as you recomended.
Also, /device configuration/multisector transfers = 16 and /device configuration/translation mode = automatic.

But there is no improvements. I gave up after 40 min of installer at 55 %.

There is another possibility ?

Well, there are some other possibilities:

- the slowdown may not be caused by the disks. you can see what's going on once it's installed, just log in with ssh and run "htop", it's a very nice process manager, you may find some informations
- there may be a fake RAID option in your motherboard which conflicts with the software RAID. Try to install with only one disk pluged in, and see if it's better.

I also tried with 1 disk. Also tried with SME Sever 8 with 1 and 2 disks.
The same long installation.... bad luck.

With ubuntu 9.04 server, for example, it takes 30 minutes the hole instalation (Make raid, install ISP Config, for example).

so it's a driver issue.. search for Centos Hp dc5700 issues

next time, check hw compatibility before spending money and time

Thanks cipandales  for posting this question and thanks  Stefano  for suggesting the driver issue.

I have had the same issue with a DC7700 - and no success. However, thanks to the power of google, I believe I have solution for you.

Try this option at the cd install menu -  pci=nommconf - it worked great for me.  It has something to do with the onboard graphics card and memory allocation I believe. Make sure the BIOS is in AHCI mode otherwise it will be slower at formatting.

Thanks for all replies !
I installed Sme Server with pci=nommconf and again with pci=nommconf acpi=off.
It took the same time as usual and after installation, the read/write on the sata hardisks it is very slow - it takes 2 or 3 times like another server for every settings.

Another opinion ?

p.s. i had to use pci=nommconf for it to work in my dc7700.
