On friday night, i started reconstructing a server.
I had a problem that i could not resolve in a raid1 enviroment.
So i just backed up and reinstalled the sme server os on two new drives.
Here is my suggestion to anybody doing this or build any new systems or replacing the sme os and where you are going to use Raid1
After you have decided upon whether to use a spare or not in the initial setup.
Only use one drive in the server while installing and setting up your server.
Why,
Because if you do not, from what i have seen, is that the second drive in the raid1 is synched only after the sme server operating system gets put on the first drive. That is what seems to take place. Any you probably are not going to want to reboot while the drives are syncing into a raid1 status, even thought it is possible to do so.
So by using only one of the drives up front, you will be able to reboot as many times as necessary while installing updates and any addition software to the sme server operating system before you rebuild your second drive into the raid1 array.
This may also speed your process of creating your server because during the rebuild of an raid array slows your drive access on the first drive.
Also if you mess up during the install process , you only have to erase the MBR on the one drive to reinstall the sme os.
You will feel good about rebooting the server without having the rebuilding array working during that process.
When you are done, you can rebuild the array while having a good cold beer.
So i say, go as far as you can on creating your server on one drive before you install that second drive and start to rebuild your array.
