I am doing my best to step up and help the cause of sme lately by joining the wiki doc team and by testing as many contribs as I can and by checking out the bug tracker and doing my best to confirm any bug request. That is about the extent of skill level sorry

But what I would like to know is how does one go about keeping track with the updates to the beta? I noticed today that my test servers had updates waiting. I would love to be more involved even if it is just to keep track on developments

Release of Core Packages are the result of a bug being resolved at Bugzilla, may it be for version 7.xx or version 8.xx.  A similar situation exists for contribs.  If you wish to follow developments, Create an account at Bugzilla and configure bugmail to include all categories of interest to you.  You can do this by accessing: 

http://bugs.contribs.org/userprefs.cgi?tab=email

I would tick most of the squares, except the last two lines at the bottom, in this way, you will get everything. 
Be prepared to receive a good number of emails each and every days.  It may be a good idea using a dedicated email address for this of you can, separate from your private email address.  Any question, just ask.

Not all updates come from the SME developers -- your SME will also offer to install updates developed for CentOS.

Off course you can follow every mail fired from bugzilla, but I think that is overkill for normal users of the stable releases.

So for others interested in updates of SME Server core packages on stable releases you best subscribe to the updatesannounce mailing list as all core packages the development team controls and releases are announced on this list including release notes and references to relevant bugs. (Keep in mind that a lot of packages are outside the control of the development team as they are taken straight from the CentOS repository)
