Windows 2000 Authentication problem
« on: June 11, 2002, 02:09:39 AM »
Quick summary of my home network:

I have a Windows 2000 server which administers domain foo.com. This server has an "account" on the e-smith server (the admin account has been renamed, and is a user on the e-smith server).

I have an e-smith server which administers domain bar.com.
E-smith is the gateway/firewall/router for our broadband access.

Whenever I try to browse the samba share on the bar.com (e-smith) server, from my Windows2000 workstation or server, I get

"\ is not accessible. The account is not authorized to log in from this station."

OK - what have I been dumb about?!? I know I have missed something out, or misconfigured something, or whatever - help!

Thanks!

darren

have both the servers their own distinct ip addresses.
are they both in the same range    i.e 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.255
if not in the e-smith manager try adding a local network

Can you ping the e-smith server from the win boxes.

are you challenged when trying to access the bar domain? If so are u specifying domain\user account for the bar domain when entering the username pasword to connect?

do you have an account with the same name in the fo dmoain? if so use the same passwords on the account in both domains. Maybe its using the foo.com username and password when trying to authenticate in the bar.com domain?

192.168.1.255 is reserved for broadcast by default. Change it to something 192.168.1.2-254

Thanks for the replies.

All of the devices are on the same IP range - 10.2.2.x. The e-smith box is 10.2.2.1, the windows server and desktops all have fixed IP addresses allocated by the e-smith server.

I can ping the e-smith box from the Windows boxen.

I can ping the Win server from e-smith.

I am not challenged for user id / pwd when trying to browse the e-smith area from the Windows boxen (I am using Network Neighbourhood to browse, rather than typing in start - run - \server\folder).

There are accounts for the Windows users in the e-smith domain, with the same passwords as on the Windows domain.

There are hostnames for the Win boxen in the e-smith domain.

You can see why I have been really frustrated by this!

Thanks,

Stuart

I had the same problem with e-smith 4.1.2. After upgrading to 5.1.2 this problem was over. What version of e-smith are you running?

Bob may be onto something. Isn't this an older samba issue ?? something like having to enable encrypted passwords in samba server to allow connections from win2k clients...

follow the howtos and upgrade samba...

I have upgraded to Samba 2.2.3a, but no joy 8-(

The e-smith server IP address is set as the default gateway and DNS server in the 'doze TCP/IP settings.
