How do I know that a restore is really finished ?
« on: November 15, 2009, 12:36:35 PM »
Hello,

I ran a full restore of my server for testing, using the standart DAR tool.
It was a restore from local usb Disk, launched from the web admin.
I had a network failure causing the end of the automatic refreshing list of restoring files.

How can i be sure that the restore process is ended ?
Is there a way to verify that all actions are closed ?

Thanks for your help

The restore was potentially interrupted, so you should do the restore again.
You should get notification from the server manager panel that the restore is complete.

Do you really think there was an interruption? The usbdisk is connected to the server. I just launched the restore from a browser on a pc. The network failure has occurred on the pc (wifi connection...).
I take à look at the server itself, disks were always hardly busy!

But now, three hours later, no disk activity led is blinking and I just don't know how to be sure that my restore is ended...

It wasn't exactly clear from your first post.

You would need to look at the restore log file, see /var/log/.......

Keep in mind there is a Reconfiguration and Reboot button that you need to press AFTER the restore has fully completed.

If you open server manager you should see a warning.

Select the Reboot or Shutdown panel and select the Reconfigure option.
This runs
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

As long as your files had completed restoring, then this will be OK to do.

Note you MUST confirm that all files were restored & complete by looking at the log file or else no one can tell you what state your server will be in.

Thanks for your help: in the log file, I saw that all backuped accounts were recreated, and everything seemed ok.
So I rebooted from the console using signal-event post-upgrade; signal-event reboot

I had an warning at the reboot saying that a restore was processing hen the server has been restarted... But bypassing this warning screen, everything seems fine and working! :D

As I said you should have confirmed from the log files that all files had been restored and that the restore was complete, BEFORE running those commands.
As it is now there is no guarantee that all files have been restored, it might look like it but something may be missing because it hadn't finished ???

So, there is a CLEAR message in the log file that indicate the restore is finished ?

I restored approx. 70 GB of files, I don't know how to see in the log files if eveyrthing is really back again...

So which log file is the good one and what message tells "Restore complete" ?

I can restart all my restore (from sme reinstall from scratch and so on) if I know where to look for a clear message :)

If your server manager panel had not been disconnected, then you would have eventually seen the list of files restored displayed on screen, with "Restore complete" at the end.

I'm not 100% sure, try
/var/log/messages
