System not finding network card
« on: November 15, 2009, 05:56:53 PM »
I have a customer's system that was working perfectly until I installed the latest updates via Yum.  It now tells me that the network card "does seem to be present"  I have tested the system with Knoppix and it finds the card and can get on to the Internet.

Short of rebuilding the system any ideas?

Thanks,

Tony

Tony, sorry but: do you know we are faaaaaaar from your server, desktop, screen and you are asking for help without any kind of useful info? :-)

1) what version of SME?
2) what kernel?
3) what about errors in the logs? (dmesg and /var/log/messages)
4) what about opening a bug in bugzilla as suggested when you wrote this post? :-)

Sounds like something for the bug tracker!

I found that running "2. Configure this server" in Server console sometimes fixes NIC problems. To get to Server console login as admin via PuTTY or attached monitor and keyboard.

Good luck!

You should only need to do that after changing the hardware.

If the network card is not found, that is a problem, and should be reported via the bug tracker. Period.

Hello Heckler I see you found some more people in the forums to annoy,

Paperguides-
Hi, I will work hard to try and help on this topic.
Listen to wires12 that should help, if you can login to the console from the server, or remotely using ssh or putty, then access the console from the terminal by going to (ssh admin@yourdomain.com) and you can select option #2 (configure this server) as wires12 has suggested and then you can re-configure your network cards from there
If you can not login remotely then you'll have access the server directly from the keyboard attached to the server itself, and login as (admin), and (yourpasswork) this will open your SME console window to access option #2 (configure this server)

If none of this helps then if you could be so kind as to post your setup such as:
1.Are you setup as a Server Mode Only (one network card)
2.Are you setup as a Gateway Mode (meaning 2 network cards installed)

Anyhow any information you can provide on your setup; and I would be most happy to provide the best customer care available.

Thank you for using SME

P.S
It is greatly appreciated that you post any bugs in the bug tracker in order for SME persons to address this topic in their programming or documentation.

Agent86, it would also be greatly appreciated if you would help us to investigate the cause of this problem, but in the bug tracker. Thanks.

Paperguides, please open a bug in the bug tracker, and answer all Stefano's and Agent86's questions there, in the bug report.

Thanks.

Sorry,  I made so assumptions.  As it is a production server on a customer site it is the latest version (7.4) and has patches applied as soon as available.

1) what version of SME?   7.4
2) what kernel?  2.6.9.55.0.12.ELsmp
3) what about errors in the logs? (dmesg and /var/log/messages)  see messages below
4) what about opening a bug in bugzilla as suggested when you wrote this post? :-)  I am confused as to when to raise a bug and when to ask a question.  I don't feel qualified to decide whether something is a bug or operator error.

Thanks for the help

Tony

fully updated but you are using an old kernel: last available is 2.6.9-78.0.22.ELsmp

about raising a bug, use this rule: if something doesn't work out of the box, raise a bug

Thank you

AhhHaaa YOU ARE RIGHT LOL
I see the emoticons, very true I missed this.

Thanks for straightening me out in a personable way; and please forgive my blunt and incorrect conclusion on this topic. :D

Agent86

So just because you don't see the emoticon, and many people NEVER use emoticons, it's OK for you to perceive a poster as a heckler. The same words are still there.

Let's hope that your blunt and incorrect conclusions stop (with or without emoticons) and we do not need to "straighten you out" in future. Your tolerance to answers you perceive as heckling needs a massive shift. What you perceive is not necessarily what the poster perceived. A straight answer is a straight answer, which has always been given for a reason, whether you like it or not.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
