External email with a External domain
« on: November 28, 2009, 02:12:23 AM »
Dear Friend, I just trying to be clear in order to be sure that the sme server will be work as internal and external email server, bellow the scenario:

Server=IBM X320 with 8 RAM Memory
SME version=7.4
Configure as = File a Private Gateway
Lan=10.0.0.0
Wan=Valid IP provided by the ISP
internal domain=company.local
External domain registered=abc.com
Users created in sme = 180

In this moment I have a valid internet domain registered (abc.com), but to be honest I donĀ“t have sufficient money to pay a hosting web provideer to managment my email,  so the idea is configure sme server as internal and external e-mail server in order that my sme users will be able to send email locally and externally.

Please send to my if it possible an how to guide in order to implement this.
Thank in advance,
Gully

> Server=IBM X320 with 8 RAM Memory

Don't know what memory that is, but I see a spec for that machine has 512Mb, which is a minimum for a low end sme server. For 180 users I thing 8Gb might be more appropriate, which is perhaps what you mean (???).

> Private Gateway

That will not work as in Private mode you disable all external access. Private mode only allows outgoing data.

Depending how you want your system setup you choose Server & Gateway mode (sme acts as firewall) or Server only mode (behind an existing firewall/router).

> internal domain=company.local

No need to configure a internal domain, that's Windows server parlance and only complicates the setup.

> abc.com

Just give your sme server that name as the Primary (main) domain when you first setup sme server.

The howto you seek is already written. It's called the Admin Manual & User Manual, and by clicking on the Wiki link at top of these forums, you will be able to see and read the online manuals. There is a lot of other useful info in the FAQ & Howtos, so see links at top of this page.

Hi

I also want test same scenario on my Sme 7.4 with registered domain name xyz.com let me tell you as i have pool of public IP's so i will use any of them but let me know which DNS i have to provide (I guess My ISp's DNS)  domain registrar so i can test that web site is opening from external users after hosting at my SME.

You only need to enter details of one public IP in your sme server. Note it only supports 1.

DNS for the domain is setup externally at wherever you have your DNS zone records hosted.
eg your domain name registrar (if you use them to host your records), or perhaps somewhere like zoneedit.org if you want to do it for free yourself.

Please read the manuals etc, if you still don't know what to do, then ask here again.
