How fusy is SME about hardware?
« on: December 17, 2009, 12:23:53 AM »
I'm wondering how fusy SME is with regard to hardware.  I know that the documentation recommends only using hardware that is certified on the Red Hat site but I've been running SME 6 on a Via Mini ITX machine for a number of years without any problem, but it has been showing signs of aging of late so I think it is time to get a new machine.

When I first got this machine I didn't know anything about SME hardware requirements (it was set up for me by someone else).  Now that I know a little more and see the hardware requirements, I'm not sure if I should just buy any machine and plunk SME 7 on it.  I don't need a server (which seems to be what the Red Hat site lists) because I'm only running a small home network with no more than 4 or 5 computers.  I'm looking for a light duty small-form-factor machine that I can fit two disks in (raid).  Any suggestions or thoughts.  Does anyone know of a small machine that SME runs on?

Stefano,

Thanks very much for the reply.  I'll take a look.  Maybe I'll have to figure out a different place to keep it.

Supplemental questions:

Has anyone successfully installed and used SME on an machine using an Asus P5KPL-CM motherboard?  Has anyone had or heard about issues with using this MB?

you can find more info on google searching for CentOS4.X issues (SME's core is CentOS) and here

I have been running my installation at home for years on old Dell Optiplex GX1's, not SFF's but pretty old and they work fine under the desk.
