m$ 7 and domain login
« on: January 26, 2010, 01:00:35 AM »
Hi all...this is a great server but still this issue with domain trust with win7.  Do we have a fix with this issuen like a fresh instal with 7.4 will I be able to logon??? I have chased my tail with this issue but seem to be comming up with reg changes I have done this but after boot unable to logon with new user.  Dose a clean install with 7.4 or even maybe with 8 (when is this due out?).  Installed latestupdates including smb 3.4 but still unable to logon.

cheers and thanks with help in advance

Have a search throught the forums and bugtracker this has been asked more often recently. I am not sure on what was concluded, but at this moment IIRC SME Server 7.x as well as SME Server 8.x do not fully support MS 7 and domains.

Both the eBox Platform and ClearOS (formerly Clark Connect) have handled this problem.

If Windows 7 and Domains are a must in your setup and you're not already invested in an SME install I suggest you look there before putting too much into SME as your solution. Until newer versions of SAMBA are put into the upstream repos to SME, there wont be any easy solutions here.

this isn't true as SME's devs could decide to use a different version of samba (more info in bugzilla)..

Right... well I've read the bugs. I've tried all of the hacks. The bottom line is unless you're hands on you're not going to find a solution here right now. If you need an easy solution right now and have a network depending on it and you're not comfortable getting your hands dirty in the scripting, templates, and linux in general, then there are options out there that work.

This isn't a slight against SME. I've been using SME for years and try to contribute when I can. I understand that there are a fair amount of gurus on here who can get their hands dirty and work out problems. But I'm am willing to bet that the larger portion of users are Joes in small office situations who simply need something that works and don't have the budget to buy Microsoft servers to manage what is essentially an authentication service.

I still have 2 x SME running email and firewalling functions on my network. They have been working 99% flawlessly for about 5-6 years at this point and kudos for that. I now have 2 Win7Pro users and more on the way on my network so I tested eBox and ClearOS and participated in their forums and bug trackers during that time and am now happily running a ClearOS domain controller to manage my 90% Windows LAN.

Setup was a breeze and two tests of failure and restore went off well enough to make the decision easily. Their roadmap includes a PDC/BDC backup but with a Virtual machine on standby and routine backup files put onto my network I don't think a BDC is even necessary... so Kudos to Clear Foundation for this solution.

Dear All

See
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5728
which indicates work is being done on the samba version needed to support Win7 domain login, at least with sme 8beta5.
Whether or not the samba version can or will be backported to sme7, I don't know.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

I think it very important for Sme Servers future to fix this bug with domain joining  and win7/vista.

this is not a SME's bug, is a Samba one.. on SME8 we are going to use a "custom" version of samba (i.e. not the one coming from Centos) that should solve the problem

if you really need such a feature, please consider to make a (big) donation, thank you

Large enough sums for people to give up their day time jobs IMHO as all testing, development and bug fixes are done by a limited team in their spare time.
