Can't retrieve email
« on: June 17, 2002, 07:12:12 PM »
For some reason my new Mitel box will not retrieve emails.

I use a multi-drop dailup connection, and the connection comes up without a problem. There is email in the related account (I can see it using the ISP's webmail utility), but my server will not retrieve the mail. I have checked and double checked the settings on the 'e-mail retrieval' page and cannot see anything wrong. Attached is a section of the messages file that is related to the connection. I don't see anything relevant in any other log file. If any one can help me with this or can point me in the right direction (I don't even were to start looking) I would really appreciate it.

Kees

PS. I notived that daild registers the wrong time in the messages file, is that a problem.

Hi Kees,

I had the same trouble with ISDN dial up.  This worked for me but I too receive the Cron message every so often...

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=13883.msg52809#msg52809

Hope this helps.
Is there a permanent solution to this?

I solved it.

My first problem was that I have a email address 'name@myisp.com' and can have unlimited addresses 'anything@name.myisp.com', so I set up the server with domain 'myisp.com' and a virtual domain 'name.myisp.com'. The problem however was that my isp's pop3 server is called mail.myisp.com and SME adds an alias to the server called mail.(domain), which of course becomes mail.myisp.com. Once I found that out and deleted the local mail.myisp.com things started to get somewhere.

My second problem was with /etc/startmail as it does not retrieve mail, but /etc/fetchmail does not dial out, so I edited the /etc/startmail (custom) template and added a call to /etc/fetchmail after the killall statement, with a sleep statement in between. I also increased the 'short' connection time to 85 seconds to be save.

Once I solved the first problem the second one was relatively easy. Anyway things are working now. I hope this will help someone somewhere sometime.

Just trying to set up a home network - no domain, nothing fancy - e-smith seemed to offer a simple solution - giving everyone acces to a local mail server should allow any of the family to use any free computer...

30 minutes to setup most things (web, localmail, printer,Linux and MS access), but 3 hard days later and I still cant get incoming e-mail.  I know nothing about this comms stuff - thats why I went for this software.  Does the solution really involve going into the server as root and hacking config files?

What domain name should I use, to get xxx.191@ntlworld.com e-mail. I assume giving everyone 191 as a last name (or doing 191 group?) will give the correct names.  I thing I have tried every combination, and nothing works.

Thanks for any help.

I don't think the collecting of e-mail has anything to do with the domain name, you can give it any domain you want to. However if the mail that comes in is not for that domain it will be either bounced or send to admin (depending on your 'E-mail to unknown users' setting in 'Other e-mail settings'). You could set your domain to 'ntlworld.com', but then everyone on ntlworld.com would be considered local and you could not send e-mail out to anyone else on ntlworld.com. Alternatively you could send administrative mail to another account, but that would be ALL your adminstrative mail.

I am having a similar, but slightly more complex problem at the moment, but I haven't found a solution yet.

PS. Maybe you should try starting a new thread, as this one is getting rather old. If I hadn't click the 'email replies...' box at the bottom when I started this thread I would have never seen your message.
