Help ! Installation Dell PowerEdge T110 Chipset Intel 3420
« on: March 02, 2010, 05:07:36 PM »
Hello World,

I just bought 2 servers Dell PowerEdge T110 with Intel 3420 chipset.
I tried to install the SME 7.4.
The original Intel disk controller is not detected.
I even tried with an installation from a USB CDROM drive, but the hard disk drives are not detected.
I also tried a version 8beta4 there seems to be working without any problems. I would like to install a 7.4 version since 8 is still in beta.
Someone would have a solution?

Thanks a Lot

unfortunately SME7 doesn't support that chipset, so you should install SME8

you should always check hw compatibility before buying.

Thanks for your respons.

Yes, I know that. But find this info is very difficult.

The exit speed of SME version is much too slow compared to the speed of advances in hardware.

Currently, if you buy a new server it becomes difficult to find one with hardware still compatible with SME ... Or you must buy one on eBay  :-?

If I install the version 8beta4 can I have trouble when the version 8 final was available ?

There are plan to update version 8betaX to the very wanted final 8 when available?

Thanks a Lot

You can speed up the release of sme 8 by testing sme8beta4 (and yum update to beta5). Report your findings.

You should ALWAYS check hardware compatibility with the base OS that sme uses.

Using sme8beta4/5 should be OK, as it is well developed, you really have no choice with that hardware.

I'm sure there are plans to release a final sme 8, but it has always been said there is no specific timeframe, it will be ready when it is ready. More testers and developers would help speed up the process.

It has also been said in the past that upgrades from beta to final release is not guaranteed or supported. It has been known to work OK in the past, but some users have also reported problems.
The only sure answer here, is to reinstall a fresh copy of sme 8 final, when it is released.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
