I want to utilize an e-smith server in my lan as an internet gateway. i am currently using a Win2000 server as a primary domain controller and DHCP server. Can the e-smith server get a dynamic IP assignment from the Win2000 server?

IMO you wouldn't want to set your gateway up with a dynamic IP on the local lan side.  You need to be able to specify what this IP is in your DHCP scope on the 2K server so your clients are given the proper network info to get off their subnet.  If it changed at any time you would have to change it in the scope and then have all your clients release/renew their addresses.

You can do it with DHCP, but make sure you create static IP reservation for SME on the DHCP server (using LAN NIC's MAC address). This way SME always gets the same IP and you can specify it as a gateway for your clients.

I prefer to use static IP for Servers and gateways for myself though.

I like using DHCP with MAC-reserved addresses for servers. It keeps all the information in one place, and you don't have to worry about forgetting a setting...

I think what Mike was asking was if the local SME NIC can get an IP via DHCP. I know you can set the external NIC for DHCP via the ISP, but can you do it for the local side? I don't recall anything in the user-friendly setup stuff for it... How would you go about doing that?
