Topic: lost config

I've had a 5.1.2 gateway & server running for months with no problems; it's been a brick.  There were storms the other night and the next morning the gateway seemed to be running but not working. I attached a monitor and reset the server and it appeared to boot fine but all the config options came up as disabled.  From the server console the config was blank.  Trying to create one didn't work, it would just return to the server menu.

I booted the restore diskette with the cd rom in the drive and it recreated the file system; disappointed but not surprised.  It is now back up and working.  

Moot point but, how does one restore the config without losing all the data?  Is thee a procedure for this; and why would just the configuration be lost?

I had this exact same issue.
All seem ok but system has blank config and says it is starting the network and diald but doesnt
Any ideas.
Also wont allow me into server manager.
