SME Server 7.5 Beta 1 Release QUESTION
« on: May 13, 2010, 06:38:01 AM »
Hi All

This is not to put a cloud over SME Server in any way.

But, my question is

Is there any real need to release 7.5 if the release of8.0 is not to far away?

I am new to SAIL SME Server v8b6 and have been using SME for many years.
I have already done some research and only ask questions if I still can't work it out.

Yes, as there is no estimate as to when SME Server 8 is released.

Sorry to raise this again, but we still need more testers and people to verify bugs for SME Server 8. There still is a long list of issues that need some attention, ranging from proper diagnosis through actually fixing them to verifying them, see the bug matrix

I have had organised another machine. It hasn't arrived here yet.  When it does (going on your response cactus) I will be installing 8.0.

Is there somewhere that I can go to view what are current issues?  I'm not very good with linux or SME but this will be a good opportunity for me to learn

Yes, see my previous comment and follow the link to the bug matrix.

No problem, try and install SME Server 8 and work with it, if you discover issues raise them as a bug (one issue per bug please) and be prepared to follow-up on it.

teviot,

Note that instead of a physical piece of hardware, it is also quite possible to run SME in a virtual environment like VMware. All you need is to install the free Vmware server and you are able to install SME in a virtual environment straight from the ISO file that you downloaded (no need to burn a CD). Also a great feature is that you can take a snapshot of the current disk contents. So you can install and play to your hart content and when you think you messed it up in any way, simply restore from snapshot and bingo a completely fresh install again.

Have fun.

Click Bugs, then Matrix.

Thanks you for that. I was aware that that is possible. I think I have done that with previous versions.  But unfortunately I don't have enough hard-drive space at the moment and can't do that unless I install windows on the new machine and then run virtual on that.

Might give that some thought.

Thanks

You can also run VMWare on linux and your SME Server: http://wiki.contribs.org/Vmware
