Create alias for mail@
« on: June 21, 2010, 12:51:26 PM »
I'm sure this must be documented somewhere, but can't see it (searching for "mail" tends to bring a lot of results!).

I've a customer you wants to use the email address mail@theirdomain.com as they have it printed on their letterheads etc. but I can't create "mail" as a pseudonym, group or user as I get the following error (or similar):

the group "mail" can't be created because there is already a system account of that name.

So I assume mail is a reserved account used by the SME server.  Is there a workaround so that I can also redirect email for mail@ to other local users.

Thanks

Jon

I can create a mail@mydomain.com pseudonym just fine, so i guess you actually have a user or group called mail as the message is trying to tell you.

Thanks for the feedback.  I did try it on my own local server as well as on the client server before posting & both returned the same error.

If sme doesn't use the "mail" account for anything reserved, I could try deleting it - although I checked using db users show and there was no record of a mail account. It also doesn't appear in server manager as a User, Group or Pseudonym so I was reluctant to try deleting it until I understood why it was there.

I'll take another look (& maybe try yet another server to be safe!).

My guess it is reserved by the hostname mail.domain.tld in your case, could that be true?

Did you make sure you entered both mail and the domain when creating this pseudonym? I get the same error when I create the pseudonym called "mail", but mail@domain1.tld and mail@domain2.tld do work OK.

Cheers Cactus ...

I knew it had to be something simple I was missing.  Yes, by adding the domain to the pseudonym, it works fine.  This client have about 5 domain names, which is why I was just specifying it without (lazy me!) but all done now thanks.

Here's an old post with way too much info about "system accounts":
