USB Broadband [ Server Gateway] ?
« on: July 08, 2010, 03:37:17 AM »
Hi All,

I was just thinking if this could possible on our SME Server current version. I've been working on usb broadband [ ZTE MF627]  modem on Ubuntu 10.0 and works great but I have difficulty with SME. My purpose for this idea is to have a backup internet connection when a wired broadband connection fails I still  have other ways to connect to the internet. That's why usb broadband really fits to my needs. Is anyone have same situation as mine or maybe have it worked? Just share me some of your  ideas..

Regards,
Rocel

hello,

Just an update. I was able to connect my other Huawie E1550 modem with my newly install SME8Beta5 and was able to switch it's modem using usb_modeswitch. I tried working with wvdial and it was successfully able to dial to the network but my problem now is how integrate to SME using it as a Server-gateway mode?  During wvdial connection it created a ppp0 connection so I wonder if could create a dialup connection using this usb modem but I only see this /dev/ttys0---3. My question how do I add ttyUSB0 from the dialup option?  is there any config that I could use?

Regards,
Rocel

You might get more response by joining the devinfo mailing list and posting your development ideas and questions there. If it is technically possible to do what you want on SME, you would then open a new bug to track progress of your development task.

The issue I would think, is establishing isolation which is done via the second NIC in a server gateway setup. I do not know how you approach that security issue when directly accessing the USB port. Devinfo mailing list should start you in the right direction, if at all possible/practical.

Hi mary,

Thanks for the response I thought no one would response for this. I loved to work on this one specially it more practical on our situation. But as of now I have only little knowledge with Linux and i'm still learning and proudly say I learned most of them through SME.

As to this project of mine I been able to workout some problems but not been able to complete solved it. I thought it was just easy as the dialup setup connection which is already in place in SME but i'm wrong with this assumption. Anyway I just continue reading some guides hopefully I can work this out and also if there are others who have similar ideas with project just share also your work. Temporarily I installed SME on Virtualbox with Ubuntu Host which usbmodem works already I just use Ubuntu as my gateway.

P.S: How do I join devinfo mailing list?

Thanks
Rocel

On the Howto page you see this

Towards the end is the link to the various mailing lists.

I've been using some cheap but reliable combo routers to achieve the same thing.

http://au.billion.com/product/3g.php

The can be configured for auto fall back to 3G on wan fail.
It's nowhere near as elegant as a software solution, and its another or different piece of hardware but it cheap and works well with SME 7.5.1 as is, if you need a solution now.
Just a thought.

I didn't continue pursuing this as new technologies are able to solved my problem. As there new sim based router with lan port on it and just happily plug it in to my external lan and works very well.

Unfortunately the modem i use makes use of CDMA EV-DO which the billion routers seem not to support. That is beside the fact that it will probably be too expensive for my purposes.

Thanks for the reply.
