Restore server 7.5 from DAR2 backup.
« on: July 21, 2010, 01:09:08 PM »
Hi I'm wanting to test and make certain of the integrity of my backups for a full restore of system config/user data/mysql files.

I am using DAR2 to backup the server every night with a full backup done every sat night. I use DAR2 as this is more configurable and flexible. This is an intermediate solution until i can set-up and configure Affa correctly- I'm a noobie!

My production server is a version 7.5. The backup is to a external USb drive (250GB)
The total backup size of the backup is appx 35GB.

I would like to confirm that i can restore my system from fresh using the dar2 backup.

I need to confirm a few things.

1. I have a 7.2 SME on disk and am trying to get the OS up and running on the previous version- will this cause issues regarding attempting to restore to a previous version of SME?
2. I have attempted to install DAR backup onto my 7.2SME but displays that it cant source the repository- Internet connection is fine? (using the DAR2 contrib instructions regarding installing the software)- is this due to the same problem- I have a previous version and need to install all the updates?
3. Is it possible to restore a full DAR2 backup to a current running version- i am aware of the recommendation to restore to a "fresh" system but have come across Michael Weinbergs instructions regarding how to restore to a running system- this hasn't worked for me. I get to the part where it prompts for a backup file to restore after booting but the system cannot find the backup - Ive confirmed that the usb disk is mounted.
4. Are there any procedures that I have left out- installing updates before restoring??

My thoughts maybe scattered but a feel a little bit lost??- any help would be appreciated.

Hi I was able to resolve the issue myself- a few things that I've resolved regarding the Dar backup process.

When restoring to a new box-

1. Run the Restore process from the same or later version of SME
2. This was important- the new hardware must have the same "name" as the previous server that the backup was run on or will not proceed regardless- this maybe obvious to some.
3. Make sure that the external disk that has the backup is not mounted before going through the "restore process".

Hope this maybe helpful to some. John
