Automatic USB Backup initiated by Plugging in
« on: September 01, 2010, 05:31:03 PM »
Hello,

is there a possibility to make data backups to external usb drives (2, rotating), and to initiate the backup process automatically by plugging in the usb drive, getting an email when its finished, and unplugging it (without manual unmount)?

so there is always one usb disk at home and one in the office, being changed every day.

I did some research, and I only found this, but I am not sure about it as it seems to be 2 years old and it sounds quite complicated:

Many Thanks,
best regards,
michael

That's all there is.

Ok, thank you for the answer.

Is there anything i should pay attention to, as this solution is more than 2 years old and refers to SME Server 7 basend on CentOS 4.3?
Did something change or will it be the same procedure for SME Server 7.5.1 based on CentOS 4.8 - wont I mess up my SME Installation (especially by the use of the template work around)?

best regards,
michael

Please test and report back to the bug tracker if there is anything needing attention.  As this is a New Feature Request (NFR) thats as far as it goes unless someone picks it up and develops it further.

Test it and report back to the bug with your results as mentioned above we have hundreds of NFR and zero of them ever get put in to place due to lack of time and/or size of our development team.  Of course you are welcome to pay for a private consultant to develop this further.  No you won't mess up your SME installation as you will (hopefully ;) ) be testing this on a non-production box :)

Last point, use of custom templates is a key feature of the SME Server...if it doesn't work how you expect then remove the custom template and you revert back to standard install.
