help needed to restore to new machine
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:58:13 PM »
Hi all,
My old SME server firewall/webserve/mail server needs updating. I have configured the new machine, but then hit a problem.

If I configure the new machine directly then SME works fine as a firewall - but I have lost all the rest of the configuration and data - but there appears to be no way to restore the data once past this point in the install. (I'm using 7.5.1)

If I restore the data (from a smeserver.tgz file) it complains that it has no NIC cards after the reboot - so naturally nothing works. I have been unable to reset the NIC cards.

To add to the complication the new machine is virtual, inside Virtual Box. Although it apeared to work, - I could browse the internet - SME server picked up a 192.168.100.? IP from something in Virtual Box - and Virtual Box held the true external IP (as reported by "whatMyIp" type sites). However that, and how to run a Virtual Box VM headless without logging on, are problems for the future.

First task it to get it created and restored. I've done the install, and the restore. How can I reset the NIC configs so SME find them? (Or do a partial restore without the cards).

Thanks
ian

Login as admin instead of root and choose the option to configure your server, you should be able to change your NICs.
