Topic: Opening a .Dar ( Disk Archive ) File

I need help opening a sme 8 server back up which is a .Dar file. I need to open it and look for a lost file.
I did use sme 6.0 and did open the .rar back up with 7zip. I now need a way to do it with same 8 and the . Dar file.

can someone help me?

Please do a search in the forums, I believe this question was raised answered recently (last week or so).

First install the DAR2 contrib, then install the mc plug in

With the installation of DAR2 comes an extension for viewing .dar files from within Midnight Commander but it is not installed by default. You can find the files extracted in the /opt/dar2-mc directory. For installation of this extension run the install.sh shell script with:
cd /opt/dar2-mc
./install.sh

I was looking for something I could use on a windows workstation to open the .dar file.

I did check out the links but need some help with installing the Dar2-mc.

Did you think to use Google to find what you want. Please do so in future.

It is command line (DOS prompt) only AFAIK, not GUI.

Not aware of any Windows GUI program to open dar files.

This I understand but I am having some trouble at the command promp. I do type c and get to GRUB\  but after that every command I use says unreconized. This is on the SME 8 server.

If you can help me I have googled what I am looking for but I still need to be able to get to a working command line in this linux sme 8 server.

Why do you do so? You seem to be entering the boot menu and not the command line/prompt.

You should let it boot and after that you should be greeted with something like this:

Code: [Select]

login as:

I can open my dar back up file and restore a lost file THANKS to everyone for all the great help.

This is Great.  It really helped, but I did not want to install the DAR2 contrib.  So here is what I did to get MC to read the DAR Archive.  YMMV, or for most of you I bet you get better mileage than I do...

From the DAR website, followed this link to the MC DAR plugin:  http://mail.gnome.org/archives/mc-devel/2006-April/msg00001.html

Unpack the zip file you download, open the udar folder and follow the README in the udar folder. 

The files that need to be modified are located in the /usr/share/mc/extfs folder and in your home folder.  It is very straight forward.
