Help me to setup a web server
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:35:31 PM »
Hi guys,

I would like to setup a home based dedicated web server using the SME Server 7.5.1, just to run a few Wordpress websites.

Here is how I have setup my network.

                                internet
                                    ^
DESKTOP (win7) <-> ROUTER <-> LAPTOP (sme)

I have no idea about network and stuffs.. I tried to find step-by-step guide on the web but I have not found a good guide yet.

So far, I have installed SME Server with "server only" mode. I so stuck because the server cannot connect to the internet. I'm pretty sure that my IP configs is not correctly done.

So, I'm here to ask help from the experienced experts. :)

192.168.0.1 is IP for my router. Meaning when I put this in the browser addressbar it will load to my DLink router configuration page.

exichlo:  SME will run in the configuration you're describing (server-only behind a router) but it will *not* run with full security features as it would if you set it up in "server and gateway" mode.  Adding Wordpress to your SME Server will add Wordpress's security issues to your machine.  All in all, given the hostile Internet of today, probably not the best starting point for a beginner.  I'd recommend learning more about networking, port forwarding, what probes to expect when opening services to the Internet and how to secure Wordpress.  Perhaps there are classes in your area, or you have a friend who's an expert?

Hi exichlo,
welcome to SME Server forum.
You have to learn about basic networking and some linux knowledge before you start installing SME Server.
SME Server are quite different linux .. it's not your usual vanilla-linux flavor

Go google some basic networking howtos..  invest some time learning first..
Before you step in this SME Server stuff, you have to :
- Understands how networks works.
- Understands what is Public IP address and what is Private IP Address
- Understands what is network protocols.
- Able to configure workstations to connect to the network
- Able to configure your router and workstations to connect to the internet
- Understands basic linux administration
- Understands basic windows networking.. yes, Windows.. because one of SME server advantage is it's ability to replace Windows Server.

do your homework first.. or you'll get bullied, it's a cruel world we live in..

you've been warned dude

yeah i second thomas- there are some basic fundamental info that you need to get your "head around" otherwise the forum is not going to be kind to you. Linux and SME "assumes" that you have a basic but solid understanding of IP addresses, networks, command line and an undertsanding of how servers/PC/routers etc all relate to each other so they all sing of the same page- the forum is not setup to walk you by the hand on things that it assumes is understood before you post questions- this will very quickly be found out.
SME is a great product for what its designed for but like all things requires a good knowledge of how to use it.
Do you home work first (cant be understated) and drop me a line about things you need clarification on ....
