Okay, I'm a newbie to this, so anyhelp would be appreciated....

E-Smith 5.5
D-Link DFE-530TX+
D-Link 704P router

My e-smith server isn't appering on my network (I've pinging it at the set IP address) , it's as if it's not recognizing the network card. I've also tried the Via-Rhine and rtl8139 drivers with no luck.

(BTW, after rebooting why does "Review Configuration" show Ethernet Driver 1: rtl8139 and Ethernet Diver 2: Via-Rhine ?  I only have one ethernet card and the configuration utliy only gives me the option of choosing 1 driver anyway).

According to the manual ....

http://edocs.mitel.com/6000_SME_Server/smeserveruserguide/English/supportedenet.html#d0e1390

"The following PCI Ethernet adapters have been tested with the SME Server software and are formally supported:

D-Link DE-530CT, DFE500-Tx, DFE540-Tx (Note: not DFE530_Tx+)"

I'm going to guess that it is not supported -- why its not supported, not quite sure (I have a few Red Hat boxes using these cards (though with the 2.4 kernel))

I believe this card requires the Via Rhine (via-rhine.o) driver where the previous cards were based on the DEC 21x chips.

I have not checked to see if the module is included with 5.5

The card uses the Realtek RTL8139 chipset.  I've used it in Redhat Linux and Win 2k systems and both use the generic RTL8139 drivers.

The 530tx+ cards work just fine in an e-smith box.  I have 2 of them in my system and no problems with the drivers provided at e-smith installation.
You say you can not ping INTO the E-smith box - can you ping FROM the E-smith box to one of your other machines?  In my experience, an E-smith machine will reject a ping inherently.  I would sign onto your E-smith server as ROOT and try pinging another machine.  also issue an IFCONFIG command to see if your card shows up as initialized.

I had problems with this card until I changed the ethernetdriver1 driver to 8139too.o in the modules/net area. The RT8139 driver did not work.

According to this page about linux drivers for PCI ethernet adapters:

http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html

the adapter you mention must work well with the 8139 driver modeule.
It says:

"The VIA Rhine and Rhine-II chips, via-rhine.c. This chip is used on many OEM boards. The most common branded implementation is the D-Link DFE530-TX. (Note: the DFE530-TX+ uses a RTL8139B chip.) You will need a driver with version 1.07 or higher if you have a VT6102 Rhine-II chip with PCI device ID 3065.".

I have two DFE-530TX cards which work with linux and one which does not.

The original two were purchased when the card first came out and the third later on.

It appears that the manufacturers sometimes make changes to the chipset but do not change the version number.

I believe that is what happened with this version and later cards don't work with linux.
At least that's what I've found.
