mdadm rebuild
« on: August 03, 2011, 08:46:44 AM »
I have a strange situation, for past three weeks, every Sunday exactly at 04:22:01 AM PDT, I get an email that: A RebuildStarted event has been detected on md device /dev/md1.

And than at 04:22:03 AM PDT I get another email that:
A RebuildFinished event has been detected on md device /dev/md1.
Device  mismatches found: 128 is now an active member of md device /dev/md1.

Not only is it strange that I get the same email every Sunday, exactly at the same time, but when one looks at the time stamp, the rebuild lasts two seconds?

You might be hitting this known issue: http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6160

You might also really have a bad disk, like for instance in this thread: http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=39738.0

Did you already check your array? For more information see http://wiki.contribs.org/Raid

oops, I should have posted this in SME8 forum, not General Discussion.

Any way, yes, the bug link you provided seems like the same issue I have.
Strange thing is that it is a 1TB drive, and rebuild takes 2 seconds?

I also had an issue with rebuild and sincing issues couple of years ago on this system (it was a brand new system back than). I was told on the forums here that the drive is about to fail and I need to replace it,  so I replaced it, and 1TB drive back than was not cheap :) . The drive I took out of the server, I put it in my desktop, reformatted it, using dual boot Vista and Ubuntu, and it is running without any issues to this day.

Are we sure that there are no bugs in the way SME checks software raid?

No problem, we can move it there.

That is most likely because it is only rebuilding part of it (/boot) which usually is very small (~100Mb)

I also had an issue with rebuild and sincing issues couple of years ago on this system (it was a brand new system back than). I was told on the forums here that the drive is about to fail and I need to replace it,  so I replaced it, and 1TB drive back than was not cheap :) . Unfortunately not all advice in the forums might be as good as you desire. A good thing you found a new use for this (back then) expensive drive, it would have been a pity if you had to throw it away, when it was OK. :-)

No, hence the link to the bug report.

If you ever suspect there might be a bug (and clearly you do here), then please open a bug report.
