Install joomla to an ibay folder
« on: October 03, 2011, 05:19:42 PM »
Hey Everybody,

I just installed my first sme server and joomla with it.

Installed joomla using the guide from: http://wiki.contribs.org/Joomla
Everything worked fine, it installed properly, I've set the permissions and got instant access from mydomain/joomla.

Except that Im accessing my server from elsewhere and therefore it would be alot easier if I could install it to my ibay folder instead of /opt/joomla so that I can esay access php files, images etc using ftp. Ex. I want joomla to be installed to /home/e-smith/files/ibays/joomla/html/

So my question is, how to do that?
Is there any way I can change the command:
cd /tmp
wget http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/contribs/dberteld/joomla/smeserver-joomla-1.5.1-2.noarch.rpm
yum localinstall smeserver-joomla*.rpm so that it installs to an ibay folder instead?

Or is there another way for it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated:)
TIA.

Regards
Rolf

The rpm is designed to install Joomla to /opt
You can create the new ibay and then manually move all the Joomla files from /opt/joomla to that ibay ie ..../ibayname/html/...
Then edit the Joomla config.php files so they refer to the new location ie /home/e-smith/files/ibays/ibayname/html
The better way to move is to pack the whole folder using tar and unpack the tar file in the ibay as it retains correct permissions & so on .

Alternatively uninstall the Joomla rpm and then install Joomla to an ibay using the generic installation instructions on the Joomla site and the tar.gz file you can download from there.

Did you search these forums on Joomla as this has been answered before ie go back a year or two or three.

I'd also add that the rpm referred to, installs a quite old version of Joomla with known security issues, so you really should upgrade to a later version anyway (generic upgrade details are on the Joomla website), or just install the latest version as suggested above.

You might also consider "making your own" rpm, with the latest version of Joomla, see
http://wiki.contribs.org/Web_Application_RPM

Hey Mary

Thank you very much for that response:) Clearly im a newbie, hehe

Interesting reading and already I feel alot smarter.
I will probably look into this tomorrow night since I just got home from work, and my brain wont compile correctly atm.

I did actually search for it, but I guess my eyes didnt detect the right thread:)

Making my own rpm sounds interesting, maybe I will choose this option.
I will post my progress later on, just in case youre interested in how it works out.

And depending on what time you have I wish you a goodmorning/day/evening:)

How is your SME server setup ? (as server only or server and gateway)

If you are running it in server and gateway mode then you can vpn into the server then you can access the joomla page like you are on the local network.

You simply need to go into the server-manager >>> users  and make sure that your account has VPN access then if you are running vista or windows 7  then do the following.

Open the control panel then open network and sharing
Setup a connection or network >> connect to workplace
Use my internet connection >> ip address or dns name

If you need more details let me know.

Learn howto use a SFTP client and you won't need to mess with joomla or any other apps.

WinSCP is recommended.

hi
i have joomla 1.7 running on several sme 8 servers sucessfully, with winscp to upload data / photos.
all in their own ibay/html
Instead of messing with the security stuff i have chosen to leave as is and use winscp. works fine for me.

download the joomla zip file, unzip it then copy files directly into the ibay/html folder. phpmyadmin to setup the mysql

i didn't even mess with the contribs 7 etc stuff, all i did was download the phpmyadmin files and loaded with MC and putty.

installing extentions in joomla i jusy unzip the file then load into the /tmp folder and install from there with the joomla install

hope this helps
john

Just a quick question John...
all i did was download the phpmyadmin files and loaded with MC and putty.
1. if you didnt use contribs where did phpadmin come from and I presume just installed into the OS,
but how accessed in the browser
2. what is MC (I have putty already - v good)

TIA Robert
and thanks again

hi

there are 2 files to download
phpmyadmin-2.11.11.1-1.el4.rf.noarch.rpm
smeserver-phpmyadmin-2.11.1.2-3.el4.sme.noarch.rpm

either search for them, there might be later versions, i found some info at
http://www.sme-server.de/download/sme7/contribs/smecontribs/index.html

MC  is midnight commander, once connected with putty just type MC,
i have an ibay called openbay, that we open to all users, we store all sorts of drivers / software etc. in there i have a folder called tools/sme i copy all the contribs / sme stuff etc. with MC i find the file, click on it then drill down there is an install file.
hey presto installed, you need to run both the phpmyadmin files. once installed all you type is ipaddress/phpmyadmin

Ok i have no idea if this the correct way to do things but it works for me and is easy and simple. i have been using this for all my sme 8 contribs, my worry is if i start changing sme 8 settings what will happen when it is finally released, learnt my lesson when we changed form 5 -6, 6-7 etc. so i try and keep it as clean as possible, only load the contribs that are essentail.

one thing i am still having a problem with is when i backup the server, after a crash and restore, i have lost the mysql & ibay/html data, lucky i had done a manual backup, up to now i haven't looked to deeply into it and found a solution as the email and data has been the most critical info. I have read that this data is restored into a tmp folder. need to investigate and find out how to restore correctly.

hope this helps

There are 2 phpmyadmin contribs here
http://wiki.contribs.org/Category:Contrib

You should read them, and indeed you should read all the other contribs articles and howtos and FAQs as you will learn a lot from them. See the links at top of forum.

Why do you need PHPMyAdmin? All of the database creation and user modification can also be done from the command line, using the command line MySQL client. This would save you a lot of overhead as I guess this is a one time only/limitedly used piece of software.

For some simple examples have a look at: http://wiki.contribs.org/MySQL#Administration

Mary - thanks for the pointer.

Cactus - thanks for the view, but I learned vi as I edit a lot, but do not want to learn sql commands at the moment.
phpmyadmin is a great tool for fast and easy setting up new databases, users etc and shows lists of what is in place.

There's a lot of sme command line stuff too, but server-manager is the fast and easy way.

So whilst your advice is always appreciated, (and I never thought I'd say this!) I will skip this one,
but thanks for the view. (your last advice to me was a gem)

No problem, that is what advice is all about, you are free to take it (or leave it). But I know a lot off people install phpmyadmin just to copy paste a sql create script in there one time only to create their databases.

Hi Hawk,

well I downloaded joomla1.7.3, and the phpmyadmin and IT WORKED ! Ta for advice.

I setup 2 ibays joomlabase joomlacopy and joomlaint
so I can have the original and a play one, and a backup of play in case I break it.

Of course a few hassles from there that others maybe interested in

1. had to chmod the ibays/joomlaint/html dir from drwxr-s— to 777 (so setup settings will save)
2. Mysql wasn;t saving setup data, so
mysql -e “GRANT SELECT,INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE,CREATE,ALTER ON *.* TO 'joomlaadminuser' IDENTIFIED BY 'password';"
3. could not get ftp to verify - I think due to be bad choice of directory to put files into - see below

At this point I could read an online tutorial and get the hang of it - pretty easy and deeply competent it look too.
So I wanted to start my own site and get a suitable template, which are plentiful, and I found 3 (joomla can use different templates on sections/pages of the site).
And here's where it went south!
I cannot upload the template, and after a dozen possible issues

(php upload not big enough, configuration write problems - I think it needs to be chown root, but the problem seemed to only be if changing ftp settings)
I think it is back to point 3 above that ftp is not working from my laptop (thus cannot upload a template)

I can ftp access and password set to local network and I thought the 'FTP Root' should be 'ibays/joomlaint/files'
(as when I ftp to my sme from itself and ls I see the ibays, users )

Any ideas would be appreciated.
TIA Robert
