Restore from Server Manager hangs, reboot fails with "restore incomplete"

While in the Server-Manager, I attempted to restore a directory of files.  After selecting the most recent rotated backup, I hit "next" hoping to find an option to filter for the files I wanted.  Instead, it went into full restore mode.  I was afraid to stop it, and let it go on for a full restore, but it stopped at one file.  I left it a couple of hours, but clearly it was not progressing further.  I exited the Restore mode to another part of the Server Manager where I was warned that the system needed a reboot, else would be unstable.  I rebooted, and the reboot halted with the warning that the restoration had been incomplete and I should consult the user manual.  Repeating this gets the same result.  My system is down.  I see no references in any of the online documentation.

Why did the restore hang?  What necessary steps must I take to restore my system?

You can restore individual files or the whole system, there is no option to restore a folder (in server manager using the default backup or restore panel).

Depending on how much data you have, a full restore could take much longer than 2 hours, so maybe you were impatient.

Apart from that, a full restore is designed to be done to a fresh install of the SME server operating system.

Did you Verify your original backup to check it is good ?

When you repeat the Full Restore do you get a Restore is complete message ?
Until you get that message you are likely to have ongoing problems with the restore & subsequent reboot.

On a test system, install a fresh SME OS and then try the Full Restore, advise the outcome here.

Re-installation from the recent beta and update fixes it.

OK, so I completely re-installed on a different hard drive in case I needed the original files on the failed system.

I found that I continued to get incomplete restores until I upgraded the install disk from beta3 to beta6 and then updated from the server-manager.  Only then did I restore from the backup, that was successful and my system has been working since.  I suspect that the problem is differences in the backup due to samba, since there is a fussy upgrade to samba3 somewhere in there.
