No Internet Access when SME Server 8.0 beta 6 is off
« on: October 25, 2011, 01:32:09 AM »
Hi Guys,

I just installed SME Server 8.0 beta 6 to test the domain controller for Windows 7, however I can't make my WIN7 to connect to a domain.

Another problem, my server setup was "Server Only", now everytime my server is not connected to lan or turned, no internet access on all networks.  Most of my server settings are default and no changes were made except for Windows workgroup name.

Any help would be highly appreciated...

Here is the error message:

Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

Now I need to make my server always on in order for us to have internet connection, eventhough we're not connected to server domain.

If you use SME server as the DHCP server, it will tell workstations via DHCP lease information that it should be used for DNS resolution.

SME server is designed to stay on 24x7.

There's no problem with Internet access, just with name resolution.

sorry for incomplete info:

our network gateway is just a router...  the router is connected to switches and computers are connected wired thru lan.

we don't have a server so i tried the sme server 8 beta 6, 'coz majority of our machine are using windows 7.  then i just grabbed an old computer and installed sme server.  thanks to *mary* our win7 machine can now connected to domain.

the server setup was "server mode only" during installation i chose mostly the default value/settings.  our router's ip address is 192.168.2.1, the ip address i use for the server machine was 192.168.2.2.

my problem now is i can't use the test server yet to our network so i need to turn it off.  the problem is once the server is turned-off we can no longer access internet, with the previous error i posted.

how can i return back to normal our settings, without using the server at the moment?

You will need to restore the functionality that was previously serving DHCP to your network and have it serve a correct DNS. Without the DNS it is impossible for clients in a network to know how to route the traffic. In short they do not know the route to the internet in your case.
Since you do not tell us which changes you made, you will have to retrace your steps and find out what you changes and see how to change it back.

One tip for the future, when testing network stuff do this in an isolated section of your network and not in your production network, you now know why :-)

in that case i maybe need to reset the router to factory default...  'coz only 1 win7 machine was connected thru domain... and with regards to changes it's just a fresh install of sme8 and no updates done.
