admin email question
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:57:11 PM »
I get these emails now for the last week or so and was wondering if there was a work around.
I don't have a registered domain name for the server so I use the local. This is my ISP that is rejecting the .local domain name correct?

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at shpdserver.local.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

You would be better to use a real domain name
eg
embXXXXXXamail.com
(without the obfuscation)
That way your ISP at least will see that domain name exists.

I would also suggest you configure your ISP's mail server in the email panel of server manager, so your sme server sends mail via your ISP's mail server, as that way your ISP should accept mail from you.
eg mail.yourisp.com (or whatever)

If those still do not work as your ISP is being extra strict, then get yourself a free domain name at dyndns (or elsewhere) and use the dyndns updater to keep your external IP updated at dyndns, it's in the Configure this server settings in the admin console.
Dyndns requires a credit card nowadays, but you let the initial period lapse and they will not charge you and allow you to have one domain name for free (a dyndns variant of course).
eg yourname.dyndns.com

Read their rules to satisfy yourself of the details.

I had to Wiki the word obfuscation. :-) My ISP is that .com without all the XXXX's. In the server panel the admin emails are forwarded to my .com email address without all the XXXX's.

I would also suggest you configure your ISP's mail server in the email panel of server manager, so your sme server sends mail via your ISP's mail server, as that way your ISP should accept mail from you.
eg mail.yourisp.com (or whatever)

Tried that using smtp.embarqmail.com and still get the same message on emails.
I cannot tell how I am getting the emails with that message.

The Dyndns would be against company policy.

THANK YOU for the reply, like I said I am still getting the emails and can see that the backups are working and when I have updates to do, etc.

I assume your ISP has added new rules recently, where they check the validity of sending domains, ie to stop spammers etc.

Use a real domain name for your sme server, even if you are not hosting it on your server. At least your ISP will get a successful result when it does a lookup on your domain name, and therefore hopefully will not continue to refuse to accept messages from your server. YMMV

ie the error says:
Remote host said: 550 5.1.7 [F16] No such domain shpdserver.local

Instead of shpdserver.local, use the actual real domain name of the company that is valid, is it shpdserver.com ?
Only you know.

You do not describe your network, but you do mention company policy so I assume there are other servers in the mix.

Therefore an alternative is to send email out via another mail server.

You could specify the system to use another mail server, ie delegate mail, refer FAQ

You mean to ADD a domain name? I see in the server panel where I could do that. Being a DC if I were to change the domain name the workstations would not be able to login  -- correct? Well they could if you changed the workstation login to the new domain - then fish out all the users files for them.

You do not describe your network, but you do mention company policy so I assume there are other servers in the mix.

No just the one server at this location. We do not use it for mail. Mainly used for DC/firewall and a file server. We pay a 3rd party vendor for mailboxes/email and I do not have an account/password.

When you buy a DSL line the ISP normally gives you 5 to 8 mailboxes so I use one of those. But the ISP provider is not the same as the email provider.

NO. I mean to change the main domain name that the server is using, in this case domain name referring to a web URL.
This is done by logging in to the sme server as admin (instead of root), and from the admin console menu, select Configure this server.
You then step through the pages only changing the domain name (ie url) from shpdserver.local to whatever your real domain name is (I assume that will be the domain name (URL) that the 3rd party vendor for mailboxes/email is using for you).
Leave all other settings as they are.
Go all the way to the end and Save & Reboot.
It is safe to do this and all data, users, configuration etc will be retained, except for the changes you make, so be careful.

Then when your server sends email it will appear to come from a real domain and pass domain name validity checks etc that are done by receiving mail servers.

Note that the domain name (web URL) is DIFFERENT to the name given to the trusted DOMAIN of computers, ie the DOMAIN CONTROLLER part of sme server.

Changing the name of the trusted DOMAIN is done in server manager, and is shown as the workgroup name, with of course the domain controller setting enabled.
If you change the workgroup/domain name then you will have to unjoin all workstations and then rejoin them to the domain, potentially a big job.

This what I had to do to get my email working on my home "server only" setup and my emails send and receive with my xxx.dyndns.org free domain name.

All relevant ports were also required to be forwarded to the server from my modem/router..

Not an answer just my setup that works..

Good Luck

Only had to change domain name and the emails are coming in again. I did this on a server only server, the DC server has people on it 24/7 so I will have to be there at the location when I change it.
Thank you for the help. Since the server is a static IP but is not registered to the name any resolve issues do not conflict with the 3rd party companies hosting the email and website.

This change does affect the backups, but not a major problem.

Referring to your first post, you can rename the backup folder from shpdserver.shpdserver.local to shpwserver.springhillks.gov and the backup routine will find the old full reference backup and then continue with incrementals, or you can change settings in the backup job and create a new full backup. It will use more backup disk space doing the latter.
