Wireless connection
« on: July 17, 2002, 02:01:23 PM »
Hi,
I have spent some time searching the archives, but cannot see anything that covers my problem.

I have a 'standard' 5.5 configuration, with two conventional workstations which work fine. I have laptop that I connect to the system with a wireless connection, which works, but is VERY slow.

I have checked the hardware (by using it on a different network) and I have swapped out the e-smith/mitel server with a Netgear router, and connections (via my Cable modem) are fine.

So it would seem that there is something in my e-smith set-up that must be causing the problem.

Any thoughts on the cause, or better still a 'HOW-TO' to fix it would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Mick

Difficult to write a HOWTO without knowing more about your problem.

You're using a "wireless connection" on your laptop to connect to the Mitel SME server.  How?  Did you add a wireless NIC to the SME box itself?  Or do you have a wireless access point on your LAN, and are connecting through that.

Are you obtaining your network info via DHCP on the laptop?  Are you using WEP?  40 or 128 bit?  What OS on the laptop?

Agreed, but first I need to identify the problem :-)

This is a seperate Access Point connected to a switch on the LAN.

Yes, but I tried setting a static IP address. I also added the Access Point to the SME Hosts, but noting made any difference.

No, I turned it off to try to eliminate the problem.

Win 2000 Pro.

Noting I tried made any difference. It would connect to anywhere, but would either be VERY slow or time out after about 30k of data was received.

I have currently switched SME to 'server only' mode and put a Netgear router between the cable modem and the switch. After adjusting the port forwarding on the router, everything is running fine.

Its just very annoying to have to use the netgear router when I feel sure that SME could do the job.

Maybe I will have to learn a lot more about linux systems before I find an answer....
