hi Killrob
i do not know if that card works but my guess might be it should

but what i want to say is that i have read around the internet is that a lot of NIC cards can have trouble with other NIC cards in a network. i have not had that trouble though. but you might want to keep an eye on it, specially if you have other workstation cards that are performing less that 1000.  also get a decent 1000 switch, i have read where some cheap 1000 switches give problems. i have had good success with the dlink 1000 switches that cost about 150 dollars and the newer models do not need a fan to keep them cool.

Thx purvis for the reply, i've got a 1000 switch from tp-link at about 120 dollars unmanaged and rack-size, others NICs works well with this one. My problem is the NIC i've in my server that SME don't recognize as 1000 but only as 100. I hope that this Intel card will work with SME.

FYI, that card is one of the available in virtualbox.. AFAICT, I've used it many times in my virtual SME machines and I had no issues at all.. btw, I never had a "real" one :-)

Stefano,

To use a virtual machine's device (at least NIC cards) to test for compatibility never really occurred to me.
A good heads up if that works very well.

Killrob,

I have also read where many NIC cards will operate in modes that may not be expected when set in automatic mode. As i understand it, when this happens, it is a switch to NIC compatibility issue. Wish i could be of more help. Also there have been issues of the NIC cards being set when in automatic setting to half duplex.

Of course, all this is just a heads up on issues to be aware of by yourself or others.

purvis,

at the moment i bought the Intel NIC. When arrives i will install it then i will post if works or not. I've tried to put the actual NIC in half duplex but nothing changed, so i will wait for the new NIC and hope that works as i expected to.

Not sure where I found this tip, but remember a while back trying to find out some stuff and I made a note of the following:

to find out your current connection details

Code: [Select]
ethtool eth0
for Gbyte cards, tune the NIC to get to 100M bytes+ by setting

Code: [Select]
echo "4096 87380 4194304" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_rmem
echo "4096 16384 4194304" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_wmem

I guess taking the above up with Mr Google will yeild further results.

 :P.
