I believe you are really referring to the chip maker not Dell.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=13&PFid=5&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#2

LINUX driver for kernel 2.6.x and 2.4.x (Support x86 and x64)

I just ordered another Intel card so I don't even care as I need this compatible with 7.5.1 not 8.  There is no need to followup on this unless somebody wants to investigate the possibility of an incorrect driver or compatibility vs (kernel-distro-dell vostro 260).  The driver that does work with SME 8 is also r8169 but maybe the version is different than whats pushed in 7.5.1.  I don't know and really don't care as the realtek chip doesn't compare to the intel card so at this point I am done with the issue.

[root@squidproxy Downloads]# /sbin/ethtool -i eth1
driver: r8169
version: 2.3LK-1-NAPI
firmware-version:
bus-info: 0000:03:00.0
[root@squidproxy Downloads]#

Thanks for the help.

no.. I'm referring to Dell..

I usually buy HP servers/pc.. and I'm sure that they will work with SME because they are certified by HP..
you should do the same with Dell

don't check for the single chipset as its firmware could be customized..

Stefano,

I appreciate the enthusiasm but I am done with this topic.  The chip is compatible with the 2.6 kernel, Centos 5, and SME Server 8.  The question is the versioning and compatibility of this combination (centos4-smeserver7.5.1-dellvostro260).  Here again this topic is closed for me so I will no longer make any replies regarding this topic as I have other issues to work on but I do appreciate your feedback and help.  As stated by Mary, apparently there are lots of hits in the contribs forums in regards to this chip and SME Server but I have not reviewed them since this case is closed for me.

Thanks.
