Something weird happening with my trunks!
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:28:47 PM »
Hi All,

I am running SAIL 3.1.1-9 on SME 8.0 with 9 SIP trunks and for as long as I can remember everything has worked great until this afternoon  :-? I tried to call out and the number I called went straight to a busy tone, so I tried again and again, still the same  :-o So I then tried a different number and got the same result  :-( So I tried to call in on my mobile and it worked OK. Went into SAIL admin panel and all my trunks are showing as not connected (big red X) but showing the IP address as if they are connected  :-? So I then used X-Lite to connect one of my SIP trunks and it dialed out OK  I deleted it from X-Lite and still not working with SAIL. So now I am beat, bottom line is I can receive calls but not make them, my routes haven't changed and my external IP address is still correct. Can anyone please shed some light on it for me and point me in the right direction. Thanks for looking.

Kind regards,
Del

OK, I can't make or receive calls now. It seems to be a registration failure on all my SIP trunks but I can't see why it would suddenly go wrong. If I set up  any of the trunks in either X-Lite or a PAP2 they register and work fine  :-? Any one got any ideas?

Kind regards,
Del

asterisk says it can't make the call.  the dial is syntactically correct so I would suspect something has gone awry on the asterisk box.  If you've tried an asterisk stop/start and that didn't clear it then try a reboot.  if that doesn't work then you need to look at what has changed in your environment.

Kind Regards

Hi Jeff,

Finally got chance to take a look at this and follow your suggestions.
1. asterisk stop/start - no good
2. try a reboot - no good
3. what has changed in your environment - only thing I can see is that Virgin have upgraded the firmware on the superhub, so I reset it to factory settings and did all the port forwarding etc. - no good, even tried putting my server in the DMZ.
4. Fresh install of SAIL 3.1 from your ISO - still no good (only have 2 trunks setup for testing)
Weird thing is I have a PBX in a Flash box setup with all the same trunks etc. and that works fine :? I can also setup either of the trunks on a PAP2 or on X-lite and they work as expected :? :?

When I run asterisk -rvvvvv, followed by sip show registry  get this:
sark-pbx*CLI> sip show registry
Host                                    dnsmgr Username       Refresh State                Reg.Time
sipgate.co.uk:5060                      N      2XXXXXX1            145 Registered           Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:04:49
voipdiscount.com:5060                 N      hxxxxxxe              145 Registered           Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:05:17
2 SIP registrations.
       > doing dnsmgr_lookup for 'sipgate.co.uk'
       > ast_get_srv: SRV lookup for '_sip._udp.sipgate.co.uk' mapped to host sipgate.co.uk, port 5060
       > doing dnsmgr_lookup for 'voipdiscount.com'
       > ast_get_srv: SRV lookup for '_sip._udp.voipdiscount.com' mapped to host sip1server1.voipdiscount.com, port 5060
       > doing dnsmgr_lookup for 'voipdiscount.com'
       > ast_get_srv: SRV lookup for '_sip._udp.voipdiscount.com' mapped to host sip1server1.voipdiscount.com, port 5060

Ports 5060 UDP and 10000-200000 UTP are forwarded to the server.

Same commands from PBX in a Flash server gives this:
pbxinaflash*CLI> sip show registry
Host                                       dnsmgr Username       Refresh State                Reg.Time
sipgate.co.uk:5060                         N      2XXXXXX1            105 Registered           Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:24:39
sip.voipdiscount.com:5060               N      hxxxxxxe               105 Registered           Mon, 06 Aug 2012 18:24:40
2 SIP registrations.

So basically I am a loss at what to do next :( I don't understand why it would suddenly do this as it's been running for over 18 months without any problems
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Del

the output shows that both systems have registered correctly with the two carriers.   I can't tell what's amiss from the information you've sent.  However, if your system was working and it stopped, without you changing anything on the system itself then the answer must lie outside.  To debug further you will need to run tshark or tcpdump to see what packets are arriving and departing.

Kind Regards

Hi Jeff,

I'll run those commands when I get home, what I find weird is that I can make and receive calls on the PBX in a Flash box but not on the SARK box  :( I'll post the results later.

Kind regards,
Del

Hi Jeff,

I've tried those commands and it says tshark is not a command, on the tcpdump one I got this output:

I pressed Ctrl + C to stop it, I hope that was right. I've also had to delete the first few lines as I reached the maximum allowed on the forum, I can put them in a second post if required but they look like the ones I've left in. I used putty to connect.  Thanks again for all your help.

you need to read up on tcpdump.   You need give it parameters to tell it what you want to see, otherwise it just dumps everything running through the box, which is not very helpful.

In order to run tshark you need to install it.  yum install wireshark will do it for you.  You will also need to read up on that program to understand what parameters to pass to it.

SARK and other asterisk front-ends, for example freepbx, which is what PIAF uses, simply set the config files for asterisk to follow.  None of these tools change asterisk itself.  If PIAF is doing something and SARK isn't then you need to compare the asterisk definitions in sip.conf (or its included files) in order to see what the difference is.  If there is no difference then the problem lies somewhere else, probably in your firewall.

If as you describe, your system was working correctly and it stopped doing so then you need to analyse what changed  because something must have.

Kind Regards

S

But you don't need to install tshark or wireshark on SME server. You can use tcpdump to create a pakcet capture file,  and you can examine the capture data on another system - your workstation, for instance.

OK, I've finally got to the bottom of this, it appears that the firmware update that Virgin recently did broke SIP registration for some people :-x On the Virgin forum it seems that it is mostly effecting BT VoIP users but not everyone. I still can't see why they would register with PBX in a Flash and Elastix but not SARK :-? To prove the problem I took my server to a mates house with TalkTalk broadband and they all registered and worked as expected, so have now put the Virgin Superhub (super doesn't really mean super in this case) into modem only mode, bought a Linksys router and everything is working OK  :) I should have done this a long time ago as the superhub doesn't do anything particularly well and is missing some key features like DDNS. So now I'm back up and I've learnt an awful lot about Asterisk through PBXIAF and will be all the better for it  :-D
