IS smeserver-8.0-x86_64.iso an official ISO ?
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:11:52 PM »

Hi,

Is this an official ISO http://mirror.pialasse.com/releases/8.0/iso/x86_64/smeserver-8.0-x86_64.iso ?

Are there any contribs for this version ?

Yes, here is the list of mirrors which includes the one you refer to.

All the sme 8 compatible contribs should work (which is most of the sme7 contribs bar a few exceptions).

I would hope so. I have been using the x64 release as a production server since it has been available.
Honestly, I don't know what would make the x64 better, I just know with Windows systems, x32 has limitations that x64 doesn't have. So I figured if my server has 16gb of ram, it is best for me to use x64.
I'm pretty sure someone will tell me that's not right, but aside from that, x64 works great, and I have LOTS of contribs installed.
SME 8.0
Quad 6600
8gb DDR2 800
8 TB RAID 5
Dual Gigabit NIC
I Still Don't KNOW WHAT I AM DOING. Please, don't assume I know anything about Linux or Centos, I just know hardware

Well 64bit OS's will allow you to do more processing of data in a shorter time due to increased data flow capabilities where the whole system is configured to match ie faster processor, fast I/O busses, fast RAM, more RAM, fast hard drives etc, and enough data to feed into the system to keep it busy.
The practical issue is whether your server has that much work to do where 64bit vs 32bit OS would show any speed or performance difference.
Yes it's "better" but does that "better" equate to anything useful for a typical server role.
I agree if you have the hardware capability to support 64bit OS, then why not use it, but it will not necessarily go any faster for the same (typically modest) data processing requirements.
You have to be doing a lot of "crunching" to really get the full benefit of a 64bit system.

Mary,
How do think that 64-bit would stack up on virus scanning,  full drive virus scanning, or being a file server with a gig lan card compared to a 32-bit system.

I cannot give you any practical figures as I do not use 64bit servers.
If it goes faster (overall) then I assume it will perform virus scanning faster.

IIRC software needs to be written to utilise 64bit busses etc, so if the software coding (eg clamav) does not know about 64bit, then it probably will not go any faster than a 32bit system virus scan.

Over to someone with real world experience.

Known viruses: 1280201
 Engine version: 0.97.4
 Scanned directories: 35279
 Scanned files: 212743

That's with a q6600 processor
8gb ddr2
6 - 2tb 64mb Seagate sata III hard drives

And 1tb of data
Honestly, it was about the same in 32 bit. I just went x64 just in case there was something added in the future, like vmware or something
