This morning my server experienced some strange, dns-related problems. Dns did not work, neither from within the server or from the clients. I could ping external IP-addresses, but not do dns lookup. I run ntpd on the server, but strangely the server's clock was off by something like 40 minutes when I discovered the problem.
I restarted the tinydns and dnscache services, and they restarted cleanly but it did not help. I restarted the server, and this made the problem disappear, including adjusting the clock to correct time.
When I look through the dnscache log, from around 07:30 I suddenly get lots of "servfail" messages like "servfail
www.google.com. input/output error". Some of these messages are related to ordinary dns names like "ntp.ubuntu.com" or "client46.dropbox.com", but other are related to very peculiar names like "rjbksxdauf" and "qnbrzdqerb".
I can see nothing peculiar in /var/log/messages or other log files.
As explained, the problem has disappeared after a reboot, but it will of course be nice to know how it can be prevented in the future.
Any help appreciated, I will gladly supply more information.
