Hi, i try to install SME8.0 on the following machine: HP Compaq dc7800 compatible Minitower with two identical SATA drives WD3200AAKX.
The main drive on SATA0 connector is detected during installation as hda (!) instead of sda - why?
The second drive is detected correctly as sdb.
Any help please?

Check BIOS settings and cables.

Hi, the cable  is okay because i installed for example on the same machine Linux und Knoppix - both detect the HD's as sda und sdb. Only the SME Server detects the both HD's as hda and sdb.
Any ideas?

Hi, the cable  is okay...

And BIOS settings? I'm guessing you have ATA compatibility mode set somewhere.

Try installing CentOS 5.8 which is the base OS used by sme8.0.

Try physically unplugging ALL the SATA connectors & reinserting them.

Try swapping the drive ends of the SATA cables & then reinstall, observe if the hda ID moves to the other drive or not, make a note of which drive is which by checking serial numbers.
Doing this should isolate whether the drive is the issue or whether the cable/controller/software is the issue.

Try installing sme server to only one drive, try each drive (one at a time with the other physically disconnected) as a one drive degraded array mode, and also as no RAID mode (ie single drive only) using one of the command line install switches. This should help identify whether the software RAID is or is not involved here.

Depending on the results of the above, you could try the same single drive tests using CentOS 5.8

Theses tests are just intended to help you indentify, via a process of elimination, as to where the problem is.

Hi, i checked BIOS settings and there is IDE-Mode selected.

What other choice have you got aside from IDE-Mode?
If there is a selection for AHCI, Try it, should work ok.

Hi, All
I have been having the same sort of problem with SME 8.
I installed 8.0 on 5 different servers.  The install accessed all hard disk ran through the install with out any errors.   The install seemed to have worked but on the reboot after the install the servers would not boot from the SCSI drives.  Checked CPU's, Memory, all BOIS's updated, cables, hard drives,  etc... .  Tonight I installed 7.5.1 and it worked.  It seems to be something with the AIC-7XXX driver in SME 8. I do not have time to look into it now but will later.

Your problem sounds very different to stimzuk
Please lodge a bug report at bugzilla, link at top of forums.
That is the only way the problem will get fixed.

If you have no resolution as yet, then I think you should also raise a bug report, so your problem can be better investigated & tracked.

Hi all,
i installed CentOS 5.8 as suggested and the same problem occurs. The HD's are detected as hda(!) and sda -the same as during installation of SME8. So the analysis is as follows:

1. Installation of SME8.0  on the following machine: HP Compaq dc7800 compatible Minitower with 2 identical SATA drives WD3200AAKX
Error: the first SATA-HD is detected as hda(!) and the second SATA-HD is detected as sda

2. Changing cables and HD's makes no difference

3. Checked also BIOS settings. There are two modes for SATA  configuration - RAID and IDE. IDE is selected.
Because in RAID Mode is does not work at all.

4. Installation of CentOS 5.8 makes no difference.
Error: the first SATA-HD is still detected as hda(!) and the second SATA-HD is detected as sda

5. IDE Mode in BIOS is also correct because I installed the BOOT-Analysistool of Western Digital and boths HD's are detected and OK.

6. Installation of Knoppix shows correctly the first HD as sda and the second HD as sdb!

7. Installation of CentOS 6.3 Live-DVD shows correctly the first HD as sda and the second HD as sdb!

8. Check with GParted shows correctly the first HD as sda and the second HD as sdb!

9. Checked with Clonezilla shows correclty the first HD as sda and the second HD as sdb!

10. Installation with SME 7 shows the same problem, first HD is detected as hda and the second HD is detected as sda.

Any further suggestions? Thanks

Please open a ticket at Bugzilla providing all of the information above. At the very least, this unexpected behaviour should be documented.

Did you try adding
Code: [Select]
ide0=noprobe ide1=noprobe
at the end of the kernel options at boot time?
