SME Server on top of Scientific Linux
« on: February 27, 2013, 06:25:59 PM »
Dear all,

as we all know, the SME Server distribution ISO is based on CentOS. However, the recent development cycle regarding SME Sever 9.0 developments has shown that it would be quite easy to 'install' SME Server on top of any RHEL based distro.

I took the opportunity to test this on Scientific Linux as a proof of concept.

I am am not trying to challenge the usefulness of SL over CentOS, so I will not discuss/react on any comments about that. Simply providing and sharing information. More detailed information is embedded  within the page.

this post is OT in this forum and, really, should be only in dev's ML

RequestedDeletion: this kind of post could be misleading and confusing for "normal" SME users
and, of course, there's no reason to move form CentOS to SL, so this kind of work is, basically, a waste of time :-)

Dear Stefano,

I believe you are mistaking and/or do not fully understand the concept yet. It has nothing to do with development, and as said, simply sharing knowledge. And yes, it is at the right forum for there is no SME9 forums yet, and it is not about a contrib. Also it is to my choosing where I share information.

RequestedDeletion: this kind of post could be misleading and confusing for "normal" SME users
and, of course, there's no reason to move form CentOS to SL, so this kind of work is, basically, a waste of time

'Misleading'? didn't I say 'I am am not trying to challenge the usefulness of SL over CentOS'?

And your personal opinion is your right, but to label my opinion and effort as 'basically, a waste of time' can be considered as rude and inappropriate to the 'normal' viewers of these forums.

Ik kindly invite you to discuss this with the Universities listed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_in_Italy

and I gladly discuss our topic in depth to explore more. For now I am a bit disappointed in your initial reaction and at the same time eagerly await your contributions. The latter especially for I have never seen any from you recently in the development of SME 9.0. Neither in development, bug fixing, verification of bugs and fixes or any assistance for that matter. Knowing you I can hardly believe that, so please correct me if I am wrong.

I am at a total loss for words.  WHY would you waste your time on this and not put your efforts towards the project that needs help.  Your actions here are detrimental to this distribution, shame on you!

I should delete this thread and the wiki page but I will leave them to show everyone how much time you wasted.

Moving to general discussion.
In life, you must either "Push, Pull or Get out of the way!"

DEAR Paul, and I really mean Dear!

1. It's my time
2. I do put in 'some' effort here and there in SME 9.0 alpha
3. I may choose to do whatever I want.
4. Can I have some fun and share it please?

So far very few seem to understand that CERN and many Universities related organisations have a software policy in place.

Thanks,

Why would any of you be so negative about what a fellow community member is sharing?

Whats the point? Drive me away? can be done, simply say so, and I happily 'waste' my time somewhere else.

I'll think about this one, but it did not leave me with a comforting feeling. You made me think however, and maybe you are right. Maybe I should be ashamed for sharing my thoughts and remove myself from the internet.

Stephano, Paul,

thanks for killing a simple new posting that others may be interested in. Now they are welcomed with your view on life...

I will update the universities that I informed over the last 24 hours and that are very interested with a new URL, for this one was (as I understand it) hijacked by 'disturbed personalities'

Very good first impression guys, well done!

RequestedDeletion:

I think you seriously misunderstood my post

I appreciate your effort for the community and all your activities but.. but that kind of test should be shared, AT THIS TIME, only with devs..

common SME's users may be confused and try something (it happened in the past) that break their servers..

I see (I admit, I don't read them all) all the mail passing in dev's ML, I know who you are and what you are doing for SME and the community

don't take me bad

Ciao

Hi Terry,

no, I wanted to wait for a more stable SME9 pre-release version at the time. And I still am due to low priority on my list :-)

But to help you going, the yum repo's at the end of the how-to is where I left off...
