Topic: How can i open a closed port?

I've found that i need to open port 6112 on my server, but i have absolutely no idea of how to do it.
I've been reading through this forum, and understand that there is something called port-redirect, is that a way to do it?
As you might already noticed, i am pretty unexperienced in Linux and e-smith - so a good explaination on how to open this port will be well apreciated.

Your best bet is to search the forums.  This question gets asked a few times a week in one form or another.

Short answer:
1) Edit your ipchains rules, found in /etc/init.d/masq
2) restart the masq (/etc/init.d/masq restart)
3) Edit the corresponding custom template so your settings aren't lost

I recomend reading the howtos and such here, as well as the forums, and start searching around http://linuxdoc.org and the web in general..

Believe me, i've been searching not only through this Forum, but also on the net (thanks for the link by the way - looks like i could learn a lot there).

I can see that this issue has been discussed before, but i'm afraid to say that i don't understand much of it.
Now - when i open the file /etc/init.d/masq, i get a LOT of information, all of it about ipchains. I don't feel i have any chance to guess where to edit the file. Another thing is, that the document starts with the text:

DO NOT MODIFY THIS FILE! It is updated automatically by the e-smith server and gateway software. Instead, modify the source template in the /etc/e-smith/templates directory.

...ok - a newbee like me get VERY nervous when i see this message, and to browse into /etc/e-smith/templates doesn't make me more comfortable.
I'm the first to admit it - i have a loooong way to go before i will be known as a Linux-geek, but i wish deeply that i could understand just a bit about this ipchains and port handeling.

Why don't you try the port forwarding rpm in the contributed rpm's?  It will probably do just what you need through the e-smith manager interface ( No mucking about in config files).

Thanks to everyone of you, taking your time to help us out.
But i can only hook up on Adrej's questions.
I've been reading (and learned) how to install rpm's. I think i've been reading somewhere that i have to reboot the server afterwards. But when that is done.. then what? As Andrej ask - where and how do we use the program?
Another think that is confusing me, is that i always find to files of the same rpm: noarch and src. And i ask myself... wich one is to be installed? Or is it both of them?

The world of Linux is VERY exciting and challenging, but it is also VERY different from what we know from other OS's.

In Server Manager >> Configuration >> (last and one before-last position) shoud write (links of course):

Port Forwarding
Port Opening

Follow the links and open and FW as many ports you want (be carefull)

Ahhh Ok then my RPM's have not installed properly as I don't get those two links.

I installed the "update system" rpm that gives you the ability to install RPM's from the server-manager.

I then installed the two port rpm's and rebooted.

But I just don't get those links.

What about you Dennis?

I don;t get any error messages in the install log either

I can now get the port forwarding link (I did not install 'install.sh' before).

However I still can't get port opening to configure properly so i have a link in system manager.

Hahhhhh!!!!!!!!

Cracked it.

To get the port opening to work you need to get the latest rpm and not the 0.0.1 that is on the sun-support site.

Althought its listed as 0.0.1 it is actually 0.0.2. Go to http://myezserver.com/downloads/mitel/beta/portopening-0.0.1/

Download that and install it using the update system that you will need to add any of these.

If you want the port forwarding as well you need to install the 'install.sh' first and the .noarch.rpm.

Arg... i wish i could say the same - but thank you so much William for the informations.
Now i just need to locate the update system (if you remember where it can be downloaded from i would be glad to know), and to make that work too. (*sigh*)
