Joomla 2.5 and SME 8
« on: March 01, 2013, 12:11:57 AM »
I have to upgrade my old SME 7/Joomla 1.5 box to SME 8/Joomla 2.5.

I have setup my SME 8 server, and have installed joomla 2.5, however configuring permissions and file/directory ownership has been a challenge. Installing extensions and templates has been problematic. I can make everything work by setting permissions to all directories as 777. I appreciate the security vulnerabilities that this introduces, so that is not a real solution. From some research, I'm getting the impression that the proper way to proceed to is to change ownership of some joomla directories to 'apache'. That makes sense to me, but before proceeding haphazardly, I thought I might seek a little advice....

Is anyone aware of plan that would ensure I have the proper rights/ownership applied for a secure and functional joomla 2.5 installation? I can make this work by swinging open every possible door, but I really don't want to do that. Hoping someone can offer a little direction?

Thanks,
Jim

hi i have joomla 2.5 & 3 running on sme 8. but i work it a little differently, i haven't changed any securities as i am not keen to open any doors. i connect with winscp, then put the template, extensions in the temp folder and run from there. do the same with photos and docs, but create any folders inside joomla first. if you want any more help just shout, or if you discover a better solution let me know

thanks
john

I have actually changed ownership of all folder within my Joomla ibay to be owned by www - this way I have not changed file right but allowed Apache to take full control.

Done via:
cd /home/e-smith/files/ibays/joomla/
chown -R www.www html
