SME v9 status - if you want v9, then please help.
« on: April 04, 2013, 06:17:41 PM »
Ian has just posted on the dev list and I am copying it here.

If you want to see v9 get out the door then you HAVE to help. We have made a lot of progress, but equally there is a long way to go. Since the initial flurry of activity, progress has slowed. Yes, this is the slow, boring, and painful bit, but it is the bit that makes SME what it is. Solid, reliable and dependable.

Either look at bug verification, or install a copy, thrash it senseless, and try and find us a new bug.

There are plenty of jobs to do, whatever your level of experience. If you are busy, remember that all the people working on this currently are busy too. Even if you can find 5 minutes, it is better than nothing. If you are worried about writing a bug report then have a look here : http://wiki.contribs.org/Bugzilla_Help

So please, join in. If you have any specific questions then post the here, on the lists, on irc freenode #SME_Server or email me directly.

From Ian Wells :

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SME Server 9 Alpha 3 ISO is available from http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/releases/testing/9/iso/.
This is an ideal base to test what works and let the developers know what is broken. Please download this release, apply all updates (including from smeupdates-testing) and then see http://wiki.contribs.org/SME9.0_QA which gives some indication of the testing needed.

Without more testing it is not possible to see how close we are to the first Beta release. The community really must step up now and be active in using
SME Server 9

Here are the latest error statistics, the rate of fixes has gone down as the focus has now moved to testing. Once more people start testing and raising errors the fix rate is likely to increase again.

I will be away for two weeks so no updates from me during that time.

I am going to throw a stone in the bush since I was just wondering if the SME service supervise method is still valid/needed in the light of systemd/upstart and journald replacing multilog.
I myself experienced crippling fallout when my desktop linux distro switched from sysV and rc.  Is CentOS/SME-server ready for the switch?

Too in depth for me to comment authoritatively. I would say that  v9 should cover any problems in the first instance. Remember that there is no officially supported upgrade path to v9 (this is a RHEL/CentOS thing, and no fault of SME)

However, we will be looking at potential methods for upgrades - see this bug for comments http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7384

Please feel free to join in and help - to get v9 out as soon as possible we need as much help as we can get.
