Your english do not help anything...
SO if you're talking about to have 2 internet connections and use both of them simultaneosly to acess web, you have two choices:

a) an HW appliance like linksys RV402
b) a SW firewall like pfSense installed on a old HW.

I've used option B for years!

Please excuse my ignorance.

Why would you use two internet connections going into one firewall (and presumably serving one LAN)?

Is it to do with perhaps increasing internet access speeds or as a failover (if that is the correct term - if one fails then the other might not and would therefore maintain internet access)?

Yes, 2 internet sources/exits would permit you to survive a internet outage from one provider.
You could them as load balance and as failover (individual or both at same time).
Imagine include a radio, an cable and a 3G internet connection as external for your network and be able to configure who can use what connection. That's a pfSense firewall (but wait there are more...hehehe)

With a RADIO and/or a 3G internet connection as backup you could survive even if a truck run over the light pole ( the most common support for all cables for light and telephony here in Brazil).

Also answers the question - I think it was understood very well.

But the answer was not clear enough
1 option 2.
This separate system?
Or is it a package in SME?.
I prefer a package associated with SME server
If there?.
If not I think to make the connection of one network SQUID
And connect the computer to the other.
Understand.
Computer is set GETWAY 1
And SME server configured GETWAY 2
Computers configured proxy.
Additionally define two network cards on the computer and connected to two GETWAY

Jader, you have some valuable information here to share.  Would it be possible for you to go to the Wikis and write a Howto about both options your propose:
a) an HW appliance like linksys RV402
b) a SW firewall like pfSense installed on a old HW.
Ass you say, there is more...)

Thanks in advance for any documentation you may produce in the Wikis, then put a link here for reference so that interested people can find this information.

Note: I am moving this topic in General Discussions, what we are talking about is not stricly speaking a contribution for SME.

No problem to share that info... just create a blank page. I'm not sure if it should be name 2WAN, RouterNFirewall or something else. :)

That would be my guide about what do you expect to read on that page:)
You can even write what you expect and I'll fill the blanks!

There are no way (at least AFAIK w/kernel <3) of linux make this work. So anyone uses BSD for this.

SME is not designed to solve EVERYTHING you want. It´s a EASY to use linux distro.
To fix other problems, use correct fix = BSD.

I´ll write a HowTo / Wiki page about 2 WAN solutions. And post link here.

This is easily done in BSD, but I´ve used a solution based on pfSense. There are pages in pfSense wiki about this.
Read this: http://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Multi-WAN_2.0
And this is the page about RV402: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps9923/ps9925/data_sheet_c78-501225.html

I have used both of them but I prefer to use pfSense because there are lots of extra features you can do.
I´ve used pfSense with 2 WAN connections (a cable one = 10M + an DSL connection = 2M) and different weights so most of traphic goes thru speedier one.
With one youtube video running, you can drop one connection , get a hicup to switch connection and start to get slow video (because of 10x2M speed).
I saw this and have done a demo for the paying client... it was amazed with this!

Do you think I need to put all of this on one page, pointing to docs?

Document as much as you can keeping in mind that the reader may not be familiar with the topic.  The more information the better.  Also, it would be good to explain how you can use HW appliance like linksys RV402.
Thanks.
