Upgrade SM7 32 -> SM8 64 [Fixed]
« on: December 04, 2013, 04:25:33 PM »
Hi,
I just migrated from my SME7.6 -> 8
I had no error.

At reboot, everything worked except the GUI.
I tried to do an update and there I had compatibility issues (with hwdata package).
I removed it with dependency

Code: [Select]
Removed:
  hwdata.noarch 0:0.213.26-1.el5

Dependency Removed:
 hal.x86_64 0:0.5.8.1-62.el5
 hotplug.i386 3:2004_04_01-7.10
 isdn4k-utils.i386 0:3.2-19.el4
 isdn4k-utils.x86_64 0:3.2-56.el5
 kernel-utils.i386 1:2.4-23.el4
 kudzu.i386 0:1.1.95.26-1
 kudzu.x86_64 0:1.2.57.1.26-3.el5.centos
 lm_sensors.i386 0:2.8.7-2.40.5
 mkinitrd.i386 0:4.2.1.13-4.2.el4.sme
 net-snmp.i386 0:5.1.2-22.el4
 net-snmp-utils.i386 0:5.1.2-22.el4
 nut.x86_64 0:2.2.2-1.el5
 pciutils.i386 0:2.1.99.test8-3.4
 pciutils.x86_64 0:3.1.7-5.el5
 pcmcia-cs.i386 0:3.2.7-3.5
 pm-utils.x86_64 0:0.99.3-10.el5.centos
 udev.i386 0:039-10.31.el4
 usbutils.i386 0:0.11-7.RHEL4.1
 usbutils.x86_64 0:0.71-2.1
I reinstall it.
But I cant' reinstall dependencies  : other compatibility issues (with glibc for exemple).

Code: [Select]
file / usr/share/i18n/charmaps/IBM1047.gz from install of glibc-common-2.5-118.el5_10.2.i386 conflicts with file from package glibc-common-2.5-81.el5_8.2.x86_64

So, I wonder if I havn't done an update of a SME7 32 to SME8 64.   :-(

Code: [Select]
[root@smeserver /]# uname -a
Linux smeserver 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5 #1 SMP Tue Apr 17 17:08:00 EDT 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What do you think?
How do I get out?

I think you should install a clean SME8 64bit and restore from the backup (you do have a backup, don't you?)

(always doing a backup... always....)

Pretty sure Stefano means:
Restore from USB at first reboot after installing the OS.
You will be prompted to connect a USB disk that has the backup file on it.
If you skipped this step already (you only get asked once), then either reinstall the fresh OS (wiping what is already on the server) or use this workaround to reset the Restore option at first boot.

That doesn't work, and it would be better if the CDROM installer prevented you from even trying.

The way to achieve that is to lodge a bug report in bugzilla asking for upgrade from 32bit to 64bit systems to be better handled/prevented & for appropriate error messages to be given, quoting your specific experiences. Your contribution to improving sme server is appreciated.

This is already implemented for SME 9 but that solution is not valid for SME 8.1.

Thanks for the confirmation, Charlie was able to make a solution that works with SME 8 as requested in that bug.
