Odd backup to workstation issues.
« on: April 07, 2014, 09:40:46 AM »
Hi

Had a few problems with the NAS that I was using for the backup, have since replaced the faulty drives in the NAS, and ever since had problems with backup on SME. Now I have wiped the NAS and recreated the share to backup to.

Confused as to know why backup is not allowed, or why it is having problems with a backup set, and removing and moving to the NAS. Is there something in SME that is keeping files that it cannot move? Oh and I have confirmed that everyone has read write permissions to the NAS. But for good measure I created a user backup with a password on both.

I think you will find SME is looking for the backup set and its catalogue which will be absent if you have changed the drives, you may also find the original backup failed and has left a part completed backup etc on the server..

Look here and delete it..

Hi thanks for the reply.
Did check that directory and there is nothing in it.
regards

Then re configure your backup setup for a single set and run it manualy from the cli
/sbin/e-smith/do_backupwk
confirms it is all OK then reconfigure as you want

Will try the other command later as my daughters are using it for college work and my life may be shortened if I slow the server down :-)

Here is the config however:-

Configure Workstation Backup

This panel displays the present workstation backup configuration. You can change it in this panel and the next one.

Backup is Enabled.
Backup is made on LAN workstation 10.0.0.5 via cifs
Destination backup share folder is backup
Login is backup
Password is ********
Number of rotating backup sets is 3
Number of daily backups contained in each set is 1
Compression level (0-9) of backup is 9
Daily backup occurs at 22:00
Each daily backup session is cleanly timed out after 8 hours.
Full backup sessions (new backup set) are allowed everyday
Create or modify workstation backup configuration
Select the type of share for backup destination

Appreciate your help.

Regards

Are you sure you have a shared folder on the target called "backup"
disregard..all OK as per the config

Stick with the change backup settings and run manually then reset with what you want..

You can also rename the backup dir- dc01.duc.local - on your nas so it is no longer relevant to the server and run your backup again.

Thank you ever so much for the help, followed your instructions fully. Had another backup so removed all the files in mnt/smb.

I know mine it's not an answer, but I suggest you to use a nfs share.. nfs is at least 3 times faster than smb in my experience

So  just to confirm you renamed the directory on the nas where the backups were being transferred to,
backup/dc01.duc.local/set# and deleted the catalog
ie  renamed dc01.duc.local/set# to say dc01.duc.local.rn/set#  and then ran the backup.

and I notice earlier you said there were no files in mnt/smb

Have you tried to mount 'backup' and check what is there?
From the error messages it sounds as though there is a partial catalog and maybe other files.

This part of the code has been re-written in SME Server 9.0 Beta 4

Sorry for the late reply.

The backup has been running fine for a few weeks, then suddenly this morning I get :-

Can't remove directory /mnt/smb/dc01.duc.local/set3 (Directory not empty) at /etc/e-smith/events/actions/workstation-backup-dar line 575
Aborting program. User refused to continue while asking: The last file of the set is not present in /mnt/smb/dc01.duc.local/set2 , please provide it.
Failed to add set /mnt/smb/dc01.duc.local/set2/full-201405142200 to catalog.
Backup terminated: backup failed - status: 7424

All that I did previous was delete the entire old backup sets as I had a snapshot backup anyway, and then ran the backupws as suggested.

Paul.
