Topic: Memory Usage at 95 %

SME Server 8.1
CPU Intel Xeon Dual Core 3 GHz 4 GB RAM RAID1 2 x 250GB

After Kernel Update Yesterday 9 May 2014 I do have a Memory Usage at 95 %
With "htop" I don't see significant things. No high CPU usage. No high Process usage.
After a reboot it takes 30 minutes then the Memory Usage in on 95 % and stays there.
Swap Usage 16 K , Cache Usage 82 % , Kernel+ Applications 11 %
Server works as aspected. Phpsysinfo Installed. File Server + SOGo working fine

What can I do ?

you should learn something about linux.. ram must be used.. you should be worried only if your server use too much swap (but if you have 4 or more GB or ram this should not happen)

I am Relaxed. I am a Linux User since October 2000. My Home Computer has a Debian 7
I just wondering that the Memory Usage is raising up after Kernel Update. I try next days to boot into the "older" Kernel and see what happen.

New Kernel: 2.6.18-371.8.1.el5PAE
Old Kernel:  2.6.18-371.6.1.el5PAE
Today Fri. May 2014 i booted into the "old" Kernel. 3 hours later after reboot the memory usage is still 24% starting with 20%
With the "new" Kernel it takes about 25 to 30 minutes after reboot the memory usage has been reached 95% starting with 20%

To me it looks like a Kernel bug
Don't you think the same way ? I will stay now with the "old" Kernel and checking status from day to day.
I hope this will not happen to other sme users

IMVHO you have nothing to worry about.. just check you are not using (too much) swap

in any case, how do you see/check the memory usage?

Phpsysinfo allowed to see it from my home. Server place is in the office of my Sister.

Your system is now using your RAM more effectively. It is not leaving it unused - it is using it for cache.

You shouldn't pay attention to memory usage, it's the kernel business to manage it. Instead, just check

• If you see any problem (slow downs, delays etc.)
• if there's swap used

If you see either, there's probably something wrong (and it may be a kernel problem), but else, it may be a bug this new kernel solved (better cache management for example). You can also check from the command line using the htop command: you'll see the memory usage bar:

• The green part is the actual used memory (kernel, applications)
• The blue and orange parts are respectively buffers and cache space (which will be freed if needed by applications)

I opend this topic just as a question.

Charlie you may right. As i wrote i'm just wondering that this huge amount of ram was used in such a short time . On sme server 7 i never have seen that.

Stefano i'm not worry about this server. Everything works well.

Daniel I checked the server with "htop" and "ps -aux" no significant things happen
Swap on "new" Kernel has been between 12 K and 116 K . This is nothing to worry about
With "old" Kernel no swap at all

May be that with the "new" Kernel everything is running better. But it seems to me to much ram usage in such a short time as i wrote before

This server is used as a file server and as a groupware server ( sogo ) nothing else

Right now after 6 hours the memory usage is still at 25% . The people in the office are right now still working.  I do know that linux will caching a lot of things. But like i said before, not in this short time.

That's all

I want to make shure that everything is working well. So i will stay a while with that "old" Kernel and see what happen.
