Newbie Problems with 5.5
« on: August 13, 2002, 10:57:54 AM »
Howdy I have just installed SME 5.5 and have no prior expreince with *nix OS's. I have installed it just as a server, which means that it should be able to provide internal LAN email/web right? Well if this is correct, how do I setup outlook to connect to the server as it keeps looking for the external domain which I set it up as not the internal? I can access the server manager alright and setup accounts and access them through web mail, but only by typing in the name of the server and then webamil, I have named the server esmith so it looks like this when I type it into my browser http://esmith/webmail/. If I type http://esmith/ then it picks up the web site that I have copied across to the server. Also I have tryed setting it up as a gateway with dial-up access but it just wont dial at all, and because it is an external modem I can see that there is no activity at all to/from the modem. I have checked that the com ports are enabled in bios and have installed it on another windows box and it works fine so I'm stumped!! Please help out this stoopid newbie with his stoopid questions as I am trying hard to try to understand why E-Smith is better than my 2k box running wingate, but I am losing at the moment :-) anyway any help would be greatly apreciated, I have read the help and gone through the user manual and reinstalled 4 times with varying options and settings only to have this wonderfull machine that I cannt do anything with! Basically I would like to setup SME as an internal email server and a gateway with internal access to our website which i will update as needed, but hosting of the website on the internet and the external email is hosted offsite as we have a really slow connection where we are (56k modem) and it doesnt look like we are going to be able to get anything faster for a long time. The specs on the PC is a Pentium 2 333 with 128MB ram, 3 GB hdd cdrom, etc etc the modem is a KTX branded 56k modem.

Thank you for your time.

Not wanting to start or get into an OS bashing session, but.....

How much does one pay for Win2k and WinGate? How much did you pay for E-Smith? One is sever hundreds of dollars, the other is free.

Plus all of the free add ons that are available for the E-Smith (*any Apache/PHP web server*). Just look at http://www.familybrown.com or any of the other sites the posters here have put up. There are some awesome things you can do with E-Smith all for free.

'Nuf of that...

Since you have it setup as server only mode, it is only going to talk through the LAN connection. Try changing to server and gateway. This can be done without reinstalling from the console.

I do not have any experience with dial up and E-Smith, so I cannot offer any guidence there. Have you checked the online manual?

Well because I took the time to read the manual, and i started to interest me in gerneral for linux my sme server pis*** on w32 and wingate.

Of course if someone cant be bothered to learn something adnd just dont have a clue then i guess "dont change a running system" could be a good rule.

You are asking in a SME Server (Linux) Forum how you change your Microsoft Outlook settings, so that your pc sees the new server???
Have you tried asking at the microsoft forum??? (extras/account)......

As to the modem , well I suggest it isnt installed properly......but I have never installed a modem on the SME server.......Cant help there sorry...

Hello.

>Please help out this stoopid newbie with his stoopid questions as I am trying >hard to try to understand why E-Smith is better than my 2k box running wingate, >but I am losing at the moment :-)

I've servers (file server, email, proxy..) running in production with no problem and no reboot (This is the best part, only stops for administration).....

Maybe sometime mi$ro$oft make a server operating system that runs fine. XD

Sorry I can“t help you with your modem problem I use DSL conections and Routers DSL with ethernet support....No modem experience I hope anybody can help you.

Hi Cyrus,

I am not sure but is it possible that you modem is a winmodem? If so, you will most likely not be able to use it at all. Call your vendor to make sure if you don't know you have a harware modem.

As for the internal mailserver settings in outlook you might want to try the IP number of you sme-server instead of its name.

Hope this helps.

I have heard all the hype about how linux kicks ass over MicroCrap and I hoped that this thread wouldn't turn into a OS flame war, so that put aside, IF I was to setup SME on a LAN with NO internet connection at all, how would I setup linux email clients to connect to the SME's pop, I have tryed the name of the SME box, the actual pop address that it states in the server manager\configuration\hostnames and addresses. Or can SME only work if you have an internet connection and be physically hosting everything, web/email/ftp and have al the dns/mx/etc records pointing to it. I guess that really was my question.

And please no more messages to the liking of "MicroCrap sucks" type as i already know that, this is why I am trying desperatly to learn something that will actually work, and not just get the job done but kick ass at it, which SME will hopefully do once I get to know it better.

Thank you for Everyones input though, really appreciated!!

You're right M$ bashing is fine just not here right now. You're also right that the name resolution doesn't work properly if you don't host a REAL domain name ... etc.

The solution I found worked was to put the internal ip number of your server in outlook's incoming and outgoing server (pop and smtp server).

I think this ought to work. It did when I started using SME, did exactly the same thing. Once I got my domain registered I finally could use mail.domain.com instead of the internal IP of mys server.

Ok THANK YOU! Well that worked, sort of. I sent an email to myself, as I have only setup 1 account, but I didnt receive it, but I will play around with the settings a bit to see what I can come up with. Ok next question, :-) once I setup SME as the gateway is there anyway of controlling who gets access to the internet and who doesnt from the internal LAN, as there are only certain people who get internet access and the rest dont, just wondering if theres a way to implement that? Thanks a lot again for your help, REALLY appreciated!!!!!

Not so. DNS is intended to work for the local domain on the local network even if the server is not internet connected and the domain name is fake. Are your clients configured by DHCP from the server? If not, then that's likely to be the cause of the problem.

AH HA! You are totaly correct, the DHCP comes from the wingate box not the SME as I am trying to minimise downtime by setting up the SME box and have it working before switching it all from the wingate to SME. So once the SME box is running DHCP and DNS, it will work, ah ha, thanks! Also how does one delete files that dont want to be deleted? Sounds stupid, well I copied my local copy of our website to primary/html and some of the files are bloody ~wincrap.doc temp files and now I cannot delete them through ftp as I get the error, "File does not exist" and when i go through network neighborhood to the box, i get the error "file is in use". So how do I get rid of these without a total reinstall? Also I am interested in putting a forum up onto it like this one so i downloaded phorum, but have no idea of what to do with the files, yeah yeah yeah i know what your thinking, god damn newbie doesnt know what the fruk he's doing, well I am willing to learn, just need to find a willing teacher, if anyone reading this wouldnt mind that job then email me cbharda@myrealbox.com and then this thread can die, Thanks to all for the help YET again!!

As to the deleting of unwanted files, your life will be much easier if you use PuTTY or some other SSH client and allow remote access to your console via SSH.  Then you can delete to your heart's content (but watch that rm -rf!!!!!).  As to the modem, it might be, as noted above, that it's not a hardware modem after all but an external "winmodem".  As to the phorum ... well, walk first, then you can run!
