Im trying to find out why we are having problems getting to some sites.
When i disable URL filtering I can get to them, when I enable URL filtering with NO categories selected I cannot.

However there is no error message eg the warning message error you would get if you say were trying to get to a banned site. It just does not go there and stalls, not sure what the browser says as this is through end users.

I'm not at the location unfortunately so I can only do things remotely. I thought to test things out I would remove the ip address of this sme 8.1 server from the "unfiltered IP addresses" in the webfiltering webpage and then and then try using elinks via putty to get to the site and see if its blocked. eg.

elinks www.playboy.com (with adult category checked.) however I can get to it in elinks. Is this normal?

Shouldn't this be blocked?

Ps I believe this worked before today, (I mean I know it did when I installed it in spring) but today i Installed the  latest updates and now it does not seem to work. You can go to some sites but not others.

Do you have AV filtering enabled ? (it can break some sites as it overrite the UserAgent). When you enable filtering, with no categories enabled, can you check /var/log/squidGuard/squidGuard.log for any error ?

it's normal that running elinks from the server itself doesn't filter anything: the server itself doesn't use its own proxy, only boxes on the LAN, or explicitly configured to use the SME as proxy (port 3128) will b e affected.

If you want to test from outside, you can either:

Use a VPN (and use the SME as HTTP proxy)

or

Create an SSH tunnel to your server's port 3128, then use the local endpoint of this tunnel as HTTP proxy

Thanks thats helpfull, trying to debug now.
I have uninstalled the program and maybe try to reinstall.
Unfortunetely virus feature on or off still does same thing.

So I removed the Web Filter Contrib, and re-installed but same problem.

so then I followed the instructions in the webfilter wiki to Completely remove the program. Then did a new install and the problem was fixed.

Dont know what happened accept to say that the original problem occurred when I did a regular update.

Anyway Its working now. Since I  dont think anyone else has reported a problem after an update, it must have been some ?? anomaly.

A one off anomaly maybe, but contribs should survive upgrades if they are written correctly.
You should report a bug so the maintainer of this contrib is advised & can look at the matter.
If it can be replicated by going through the same install & upgrade process you originally did, then so much the better, as it is a repeatable event then, rather than a one off anomaly.

Real bugs do not usually go away by themselves.
