IMP not saying 'Message sent successfully' anymore'
« on: August 17, 2002, 03:37:11 PM »
Hi all,
I've noticee in my SME 5.5 that IMP doesn't report back with:
'Message sent successfully'
when emails are sent.
This used to be case in e-smith 4.1.2 (imp version 2.2.6).
Anyone had this occur?

This is normal, and probably a result of having the message composition in its own window.

Thats fine, but how does the unsuspecting user know if an email has been sent or not sent (other that a mail undeliverable coming back). I would also argue from my inspection of the many users of the LAN at work that a confirmation of a successful email is what they want and they would argue that this is better and more logical system for them. Isn't software all about serving humans?
Dan,
I know your well knowledged in e-smith and was wondering if I could do something to confirm an email... anything like an icon of message or whatever, just not nothing. The code was obviously there in earlier versons.

Well, none of the client-side mail clients that I've used (Lookout, outlook express, netscape, eudora, pegasus) pop up a window saying the message was sent successfully either.  If there's an error in sending the message (like you haven't entered a recipient e-mail address), IMP 3.x will tell you.  If you've entered an invalid address, you'll get a bounce (which is all you'd get with 2.2.x).

I can't address the question of what the users on your LAN want, but I disagree that cluttering the screen with information that should be obvious (should be obvious because no error was displayed) is a more logical route to take.  Software is about serving humans, but different humans want different things.

I don't know of any way of adding this functionality to IMP 3.x.  I'm sure it's possible, but it may involve writing some new code.  Your best bet is probably to check with the horde project at www.horde.org.

We only use netscape and pegasus and they both have a "message sent successfully"  being reported. Infact I have had many a phone call relating to this matter when the "message sent successfully" did not come up.
I will have a look the horde site for this code

thanks again
