Is is possible to have an independent pair of disk in a separate raid pair? From what I briefly read it can create raid 5 etc, but I need a pair just to hold a large amount of data for short periods. Would also like to know if this data when mounted can be excluded from workstation backup regime that is currently running.

Yes, just like any linux system you can make a new raid and then just add it via fstab at whatever mount point you choose. That could be an ibay, or elsewhere. I think there may be some info in the wiki if you have a good search.

Did just that, only to find out that the 3TB disk is only supported as a 2! Forgot all about that one. really must have a read up to find out if that limitation is in version 9. Slapped in a couple of 2TB and away it all went like a dream. Excluded from back too... Perfect.

SME 9.0 supports > 2 TB disks, so long as your controller and other hardware do.

I confirm. SME9 has the same limitation as RHEL 6, and I don't know the exact limit, but it's clearly not 2TB. The problem you have is probably that you've created MSDOS partitions, and this is where the 2TB limit comes from. You should create GPT partitions and you'll be able to use all the 3TB
