SME not allowing email client to log in
« on: March 13, 2015, 05:29:21 AM »
Hi all,

I have a new install of SME 9 that is up to date and configured with multiple ibays that have host names associated with them.  I have created a user and groups that will allow that user to be associated with specific ibays and as this is still a test system I am now trying to get my email working in at least one host name.

I know the server is accepting mail as I have checked with web mail and messages are being received.  The problem comes when I try to log in with Thunderbird.  Regardless of what i have tried the system does see the log in attempt but requires a password and then fails to log in.

As this is one of those functions that should just work when configured I have searched  but I can't find anything in the documentation that helps and am at a loss here.  Any suggestions on where to look next would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Earl

Thunderbird should/does work fine.
Use IMAP & ports 465 & 993.
Tell us the other Thunderbird configuration settings & we can tell you if they are correct.

There are a couple of Howtos under T that may be useful.

Next to the advise from janet above, please see this http://wiki.contribs.org/Zarafa#Thunderbird and change the zarafa ports with the normal server ports.

In Thunderbird there is the option to open an error console. I suggest you open the error console and try to connect with thunderbird to your server and see the events.

Me neither, so that's why the links is specifically to the Thunderbird section, describing Thunderbird things. It happens to be on that page. :-)

Hi!  thanks for the ideas.  I am stuck waiting for some DNS corrections to propagate so I cannot test  just yet.  Hopefully tomorrow I will get back with some more information.

Hi All,

Don't know what happened but my whole message just disappeared.

Sorry for taking so long to get more info back but this working for a living gets in the way of the real fun.

I finally got reliable connection to the internet on all domains but it showed up an interesting point.  I was reconfiguring the server (desperately) trying to get things working and I noticed that the self determined IP was different from the IP that any "what's my IP" service will report.  To make that clear:

IP reported by Google (or any others) = 70.71.64.38

IP reported by ifconfig = 70.71.81.204  And when I use this address the HTTP side of things works well but not the mail.  I cannot even get T-bird to create an account as it cannot detect any mail server at the address.  The best I can do is to use the IP address directly and I get a certificate not trusted error.

I admit to being stumped.  I am working off of Shaw servers and am starting to wonder if the have an active "feature" that is blocking things.

Any suggestions will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks in advance.

I tested your smtp server at wormly.com

I got

Connecting... SMTP -> FROM SERVER: 220 wyvern.dragonroot.ca ESMTP SMTP -> FROM SERVER: 250-dragonroot.ca Hi node-mec2.wormly.com [184.72.226.23] 250-PIPELINING 250-8BITMIME 250-SIZE 15000000 250 STARTTLS MAIL FROM: xxxxxx@yahoo.com SMTP -> FROM SERVER: 250 , sender OK - how exciting to get mail from you! RCPT TO: xxxxxx@yahoo.com SMTP -> FROM SERVER: 550 relaying denied xxxxxx@yahoo.com.au SMTP -> ERROR: RCPT not accepted from server: 550 relaying denied xxxxxx@yahoo.com Message sending failed.

Have you enabled external access to your smtp server in server manager ?
